Maigret doesn't need a crystal ball ?!
Tony-Holmes28 August 2022
Saw this on Talking Pictures channel (UK - old films and TV) who are running all 4 of the original Maigret series (BBC, early 60s). This story was about the murder of a fortune-teller, and needed some nifty unravelling by Maigret and his team.

I hadn't read this book, and the story gave the impression that a few short-cuts had been needed, to squeeze everything in the runtime of an hour? But the plot moved at a good pace, and by this 3rd series, the budget must have gone up, as there were several bits of outside filming, and a good bunch of extras in several scenes!

Yet again poor Madame Maigret (the excellent Helen Shingler) got taken away for a break, but then lost her hubby for a while as he gradually explored the truth and lies that the protagonists were offering. Maigret's fishing knowledge came in handy, and there was a great twist in the ending as one of the criminals got tricked.

The Crystal Ball
Prismark1028 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The death of a fortune teller, a man who confesses to a crime that he did not commit, a confused dishevelled old man are all linked.

Maigret discovers that the key to this mystery is an annuity.

It led to a web of deception, eventually blackmail and murder.

Lapointe once again gets female attention. Maigret is not too keen on her uncaring mother. He just knows she has something to hide.

Another episode that has been simplified from the novel. Once again the case is solved due to Maigret's doggedness and cunning.

By the end Maigret is twisting away. A sure sign that the 1960s is getting to swing.
