The Character "Cameron" is a tribute to James Cameron, who wrote and directed the first two Terminator movies.
In 2012, online petitions were set up for the series to be brought back and a 3rd season to be commissioned. As of 2015, the campaign to bring back the series continues.
This series effectively 'retcons' Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), continuing the Terminator universe from the end of Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991).
Summer Glau got the role of Cameron based partly on the strength of her fight scenes in Serenity (2005). Josh Friedman wrote the character with Glau in mind.
Over 300 actresses auditioned for Sarah Connor.
FBI agent Ellison is named after Harlan Ellison, the science fiction author whose work on an idea similar to the Terminator story was credited in the first Terminator movie.
Acting debut of Shirley Manson.
Summer Glau initially did not want to audition for the role of Cameron, believing she did not look right for the role. However, her mother convinced her to go to the audition.

During Derek Reese's flashback scene in the future, we learn that Andy Goode was so ashamed of his involvement in creating Skynet that he began using the alias William "Billy" Wisher. William Wisher Jr. is a long-time collaborator of James Cameron, the creator/director of the Terminator films. Wisher also co-wrote the screenplay for Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991).
Summer Glau had not seen "The Terminator" films prior to being cast as Cameron.
Lena Headey stated in a interview she wanted Arnold Schwarzenegger to make a cameo in the series.
Lena Headey is the 2nd actress to play Sarah Connor, succeeding Linda Hamilton in the role. Lena Headey's Game of Thrones (2011) co-star Emilia Clarke succeed Hamilton and Headey in the role for Terminator Genisys (2015).

After the release of Terminator Genisys (2015), Arnold Schwarzenegger said James Cameron "did an extraordinary job creating that character (The Terminator) and whole phenomenon. I never thought we would do a sequel, catchphrases like "I'll be back" or "Hasta la vista, baby" would catch on and be repeated or think that 30yrs later I would be asked to come back to a franchise like this playing The Terminator, unlike Batman or James Bond."

Spoilers

The trivia items below may give away important plot points.

The word "Terminator" was not spoken by any character until the finale of Season 2, "Born to Run," where Sarah Connor referred to Catherine Weaver as such.
Not the first time Shirley Manson has played a robot. In the music video of "The World is Not Enough" by Garbage, she played a robot replica of herself whom the real Shirley Manson killed and took her place. In the series, Catherine Weaver (Manson), a T-1001 liquid metal Terminator, replaced the real Catherine Weaver, the CEO of Zeira Corporation.
If a third season had been produced it would have been impossible for John Connor to aid his future self. In the final episode of season two, Weaver and he travel to the future, where they encounter resistance fighters whom have no knowledge of John Connor. This fits as John travelled forward, altering the already convoluted Terminator timeline, meaning he was no longer present to grow up in the aftermath of Judgement Day and able to lead humanity as a grown man. A third season would have had to explore the differences an initially Connorless future would hold.

Both Kyle Reese, the T800, The T1000 and the T101 came from the year 2029, which was established in The Terminator (1984) and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991). It is obvious that Cameron was sent back through time to 1999 by John Connor and the Human Resistance 2 years before Kyle Reese, the T800, the T1000 and the T101 were sent back through time.
