Representatives for Irish director Brian Kirk have confirmed that he is in talks to direct Marvel/Disney sequel 'Thor 2' which is due for release in 2013. The director has also helmed the Ifta nominated 'Father & Son', 'My Boy Jack' and 'The Tudors'. Kirk is currently working on the BBC One Drama Series 'Great Expectations'. »

'Game of Thrones' Veteran Brian Kirk to Helm Marvel's 'Thor' Sequel

Kirk! If you can hear me, open the Bridge! Variety is reporting that Marvel has found a director for Thor 2, to follow-up Joss Whedon's The Avengers and Shane Black's Iron Man 3. His name is Brian Kirk, an Irish director mostly of lots of TV work, including 3 episodes of HBO's "Game of Thrones" and various episodes of "Boardwalk Empire", "Luther", "Dexter", "Father & Son" and the UK TV movie My Boy Jack. Kirk "rose to the top of the list of directors vying for the job after he showed his abilities to juggle large ensembles" and complex storylines while "also grounding the fantasy genre" in Thrones. Sounds like he'll be a good choice. For those wondering, Kenneth Branagh was given the option to return for the sequel, but decided not to, as we've heard him mention before (see my interview). With the final Potter film mere weeks away, new posters released every day and the recent news that the red carpet at the Premiere is going to take up half of London, it’s easy to forget Daniel Radcliffe isn’t just Harry Potter.

In his other projects since Potter he’s shied away from the spotlight focusing on independent films such as December Boys and My Boy Jack and appearances in theatre productions such as Equus and How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The upcoming film The Women in Black is probably the closest Radcliffe has come to returning to the spotlight since his departure from Potter starring as the lead in the critically acclaimed play adapted to screen by Jane Goldman for Hammer Films.
