What's the real story with Burke Devlin.
mark.waltz27 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The first scenes of Burke Devlin with Elizabeth Collins Stoddard are fraught with tension and a bit of revelation as it appears that she is acting more out of fear than malice towards him. Carolyn's enthusiasm towards forcing a reunion doesn't get the reaction that Carolyn assumed it would, and it's obvious that the issue lies with the unseen Roger. Sam Evans meets with the innkeeper (Conrad Bain, back after the premier episode) to discuss Burke Devlin's return and gets more of the shock of hearing that Burke is meeting with Elizabeth. It's apparent by Sam's drinking that much of the town is aware of it. It might not be the expected confrontation with old friends who are at some sort of odds, but it is quite powerful none the less.

"You Can Never Get Away from What You Are"

Visiting Collinwood for the first time in ten years, Burke (Mitchell Ryan) assures Liz (Joan Bennett) his intentions are honorable. Admiring ancestor Jeremiah Collins, Burke surprises Liz with an offer to buy Collinwood. Carolyn (Nancy Barrett) continues to be charmed by Burke. After drinking at the Blue Whale, Sam (Mark Allen) goes to the inn, looking for Maggie. Concerned, hotel clerk Mr. Wells (Conrad Bain) uses news about Burke to get Sam to drink coffee. "A sober man, Mr. Wells, is an unhappy man," Sam proclaims. The highpoint here may be the location footage of Sam outside the Collins Port Inn. We hit a sour note with confused music cues, which show a certain lack of interest in editing...

A bit of an anticlimax
Leofwine_draca11 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Episode 11 is a slightly disappointing episode of the show as it fails to capitalise on the build-up of the previous episodes. Burke Devlin is the focus of the attentin and he finally visits the Collinwood house, but it turns out that here's merely interested in buying the place rather than anything more sinister. Mystery is low on the ground here.
