Here’s the deal with that Wtf scene in ‘Secret Life of Pets’

11 July 2016 1:00 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

In its first weekend, Secret Life of Pets broke the record for the biggest-ever opening for an animated non-sequel, and it drew those massive audiences with frenetic, gag-filled, Looney Tunes-channeling entertainment. Another animal-led toon Secret Life recalls: Dumbo, specifically, the Pink Elephants on Parade hallucination sequence that unfolds after Dumbo and Timothy inadvertently become intoxicated on champagne. That Dumbo scene was an inspiration for Secret Life’s sausage factory scene. If you don’t want to know plot details of Secret Life of Pets, consider this your spoiler warning. The schlubby stray mutt Duke (voiced by Eric Stonestreet) and the pampered terrier Max (Louis C.K.) have not been getting along, caught in an “alpha dog” struggle after Max’s owner brings Duke home, and then constantly bickering when wild circumstances land both of them lost in the streets of Manhattan. But they finally bond over the discovery of Weiner Kingdom, »

Sony Pushes Animation Slate With Hotel Transylvania 3 Update

21 June 2016 6:45 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Sony Animation is pulling out all the stops to boost its output for 2017 and 2018, and the result is some fairly wide-ranging news regarding both the television and film side of the operation. With its animated Spider-Man feature already moving full-speed ahead – with Phil Lord and Chris Miller on board – and television series of both Ghostbusters and Cloudy With a Chance Of Meatballs in development, the biggest titles currently under discussion are Hotel Transylvania 3, that film’s overall franchise, and EmojiMovie: Express Yourself.

The Hotel Transylvania franchise

Recently, Sony announced that the director of the first two instalments of the highly successful franchise – Genndy Tartakovsky – had opted not to return for the third movie. This was widely acknowledged to be the result of his return to the Samurai Jack fold, since he was that show’s creator, and he just headed up a brand new season. However, having performed a rather nifty about-face, »

New Ghostbusters Animated TV Show Is Coming in 2018

20 June 2016 6:36 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Depending on your perspective, it is either a very good or a very bad time to be a Ghostbusters fan. The all-female reboot which is directed by Paul Feig is dropping next month and, despite your feelings about that specifically, it does mean there is a lot of other Ghostbusters goodness on the way. To that point, today, Sony Animation confirmed that they have a new animated series based on the movie coming in 2018.

Sony announced in a press release today that they are creating a new Ghostbusters animated series that takes place in the future. The show, which will be called Ghostbusters: Ecto Force, is an extension of what Sony has planned on the film side of things, which Sony has officially dubbed the "Ghostbusters Cinematic Universe." Here is how Sony described the new series in their press release.

'Spider-Man' and 'Ghostbusters' loom large in the plans of Sony Pictures Animation

20 June 2016 3:45 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Sony Pictures Animation has always been the red-headed stepchild of studio animation arms. They’ve had a few big hits, a few mid-sized hits, and they’ve done a very good job of squeezing every possible penny out of the direct-to-video market with sequels to some of their titles. In the press release they sent out today, Sony made it clear that they’re doubling down on animation. Kristine Belson is the president of Sony Animation, answering directly to Tom Rothman, and she talked about letting artists drive the films they’re planning to make. It’s a pretty safe list overall, with an emphasis on pre-existing properties, and I have a hard time getting my head around how anyone is even remotely artistically moved by the idea of an Emoji movie. Some of the titles had already been announced, but there are new details on those, and some of the announcements were brand-new. »

Han Solo: what we know about his origins, and his movie

Star Wars’ scruffy-lookin’ nerf herder, Mr Han Solo, is getting his own movie. Here’s what we know...

Possible spoilers (we're guessing, though) lie ahead for Rogue One, and for the Han Solo movie.

So, Han Solo is getting a spin-off movie. As part of Disney’s cinematic expansion of the Star Wars saga, a prequel film is now in development to explore the backstory of Harrison Ford’s iconic war hero/smuggler. The only cast member currently confirmed is Alden Ehrenreich, who has been handed some very big shoes/cool black waistcoats to fill as the new Han Solo.

And before you dismiss this movie as a bad idea, it’s worth remembering that Phil Lord and Chris Miller are the guys directing it. They’ve already brought us Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, the 21 Jump Street revival and The Lego Movie. If there’s »

The grossest moment in ‘Angry Birds’ has a surprising inspiration

21 May 2016 7:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

When the second trailer for The Angry Birds Movie hit the web in January, what got the Internet talking most was that preview’s extended pee joke. Three of the film’s avian leads, in search of the legendary Mighty Eagle, find the landmark of their hero’s home: the Lake of Wisdom. Chuck and Bomb drink up and swim all around the lake’s sparkling waters, while Red stands offshore, urging his friends to get out of the sacred lake. Then the long-hidden Mighty Eagle makes his appearance out of the cave above the lake — which he proceeds to use as his personal urinal. In the trailer, it’s a 40-second-long joke about unintentional urophagia. In the film, the sequence is even longer, and, yes, you do see Mighty Eagle’s animated bodily fluids, while the trailer’s viewers were only treated to the sound of him relieving himself. »

In this edition of The Week in Trailers, we’ve got new trailers for Star Trek Beyond, Ghostbusters, Sausage Party and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, as well as debut trailers for Trainspotting 2 and more…

Well kick things off this week with Danny Boyle announcing that production had started on his sequel to 1994’s Trainspotting with this debut trailer. Not really much to see here from the movie, but it’s enough to whet your appetite before Renton and crew head back to the big screen…

…Moving over to Paul Feig’s reboot of Ghostbusters and Sony Pictures released the second trailer for the movie as well as a new International trailer. It’s fair to say that the Internet reacted very badly to the first trailer, but this one has gone down slightly better.
