Why You Should Be Paying Attention To Bates Motel!!

1 May 2016 3:01 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

When A&E first announced that they had greenlit a straight to series order on a show based on Norman Bates, I was very skeptical. This was in light of the rise of popularity in genre programming on television in which I welcome, but properties that I hold close to my heart make me anxious to see re-imagined. Hannibal was also being turned into a series on another network, The Walking Dead holds a huge mark in pop culture, and I worried that Norman would turn into some kind of poster boy for taboo fantasies. It promised to delve into the relationship between Norman and his mother, leading him to become the full fledged killer we all know and love. The marketing team released photos ahead of the series premiere and I scratched my head when I saw that Norman was holding an iPhone. Two questions plagued me: Was this »

Lynn Collins delivers an impassioned ‘Romeo and Juliet’ reading | Shakespeare 400

25 April 2016 7:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

At the end of her sophomore year of high school, Lynn Collins was faced with a choice: stick with the popular kids or spend her summer preparing for the school’s production of Hamlet. That’s how Collins described a key turning point in her life. Though she’d discovered a talent for reading Shakespeare aloud in her English class, Collins wasn’t involved with her Houston, TX school’s drama department because of the time she put in as class president freshman year. When she lost in elections for sophomore class president, the drama teacher “cornered me in the hall, in between classes one day, and he was like ‘This is the best thing that could have happened to you because we’re doing Hamlet, and I’d like you to play Ophelia,’” Collins recalled. The drama teacher then said, “I just want you to commit to it and »

Stars: John Travolta, Christopher Meloni, Rebecca De Mornay, Amanda Schull, Sam Trammell, Doris Morgado, Luis Da Silva Jr., Patrick St. Esprit | Written by Yvan Gauthier, Paul Sloan | Directed by Chuck Russell

Anyone remember From Paris With Love? Director Pierre Morel followed up the 2008 Liam Neeson hit Taken with a similarly enjoyable, although less critically well received, action movie in 2010 which starred a shaven headed John Travolta as Charlie Wax. And while it was less successful and entertaining than Taken, From Paris With Love was still good fun.

So in theory then, given Travolta is – or at least was – capable of convincingly taking part in a action movie I had reasonable expectations for his latest film I Am Wrath. And then there’s the crew involved: directed by Chuck Russell whose past works include Eraser, The Mask, and The Blob; and starring Rebecca De Mornay and Christopher Meloni, I honestly thought »

For four centuries, all the world has been his stage. William Shakespeare, arguably the greatest writer of all time, has influenced the English language and storytelling in countless ways since he penned his plays and poems in the 16th and 17th centuries. Shakespeare’s queens, kings, fairies, fools, and lovers have entranced people across the globe, as his plays continue to resonate with us in new stagings again and again. Pee-wee’S Big Holiday

A lot of water, legal and otherwise, has passed under the bridge since Paul Reubens last donned the signature crisply tailored gray suit and red bow tie of his indisputably great comic creation, Pee-wee Herman, for a feature-length comedy. His previous Pee-wee feature, Big Top Pee-wee, debuted during the summer of 1988, 28 years ago, and that picture was hardly anyone’s idea of a worthy follow-up to the delirious and hilarious Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985)-- it certainly wasn’t one I held too dear. When I saw Pwba the night it opened, I was actually admonished by fellow audience members and even the management of a Medford, Oregon movie theater for my hysterics. But though I approached the Big Top three years later with much eagerness, I left it feeling that Pee-wee had somehow ended up getting twisted into a formula that traded that gray suit in for something more akin to a straitjacket. »
