Storyline

Clown Chris Townsend sends the staff anonymous demands for the return of a garden gnome he stole, but it's fund and adopted as official platoon mascot. After two weeks, the bad lads generally master chores and get progress report interviews, for several quit encouraging, even for life in general. Next exercises day's long march includes a river crossing, malingering attempts by John Kyprianou -the medic lost count- and Townsend only get aggro from staff and comrades, while good examples inspire the sections, only the malingerers hinder a collective platoon arrival. Next there's boxing training, for next day's section competition, maybe something the fat lads could do well. It's a bonding hit, except for incorrigible malinger Townsend, who is in jail but unrepentant and shows no guilt; he's allowed to quit, but must strip and is soiled by his scorned 'mates'. On Sunday, D-day remembrance, the padre lends his understanding ear to the bad lads; mail is very welcome for those who get any. Written by KGF Vissers
