Indie Watch: A Trailer for The Sacred

The filmmakers behind The Sacred directed us to a trailer for the film today. Directed by Jose Zambrano Cassella and produced by Sharon Reed, the film finds a group of students who travel to a remote and sacred Native American patch of land, in order to complete a thesis on Native American Folklore. This distant swamp area was used hundreds of years ago to judge and to punish murderous criminals. The land itself has magical powers, making it possible for the dead to come back and punish the guilty. The Sacred stars Jessica Blackmore ( Ace Ventura: Pet Detective Jr. ), John Kyle ( Second Coming ), Lauren Brown ( Bloody 27 ), David Mackey, Ryan Marsico and Jordan Wall. [DVD Review] Ace Ventura Jr: Pet Detective

Every once in a while, a film will come out that pushes the bounds of human stupidity to such an extent that it drains every shred of hope out of you and makes you want nothing more than to give up and wait for the sweet embrace of death to overtake you.

I guess I should have known what I was getting into. The director's name should have been enough to tip me off; when a grown man insists on using a middle name like "Mickey," he's probably a little off as it is.

I'm also very aware of the natural proclivity that straight-to-dvd sequels possess to suck, and the fact that this is a sequel of a sequel with none of the recurring characters from the previous installments bodes very, very poorly. And it's not like Ace Venturas 1 & 2 were cinematic gold anyway. Still, I couldn't have prepared myself for

Man... you know it's a dry week for new DVDs when Ace Ventura Jr. is one of the most noteworthy releases. There are only a couple of new titles that are probably worth anyone's time, such as Baz Luhrman's epic western Australia, Philippe Claudel's I've Loved You So Long, and Wong Kar Wai's Ashes of Time Redux, but even these aren't movies I'm going to rush out to buy. Also out this week: Disney's inimitable Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Real Time starring Randy Quaid and Jay Baruchel, and In The Electric Mist starring Tommy Lee Jones. Comic book fans might want to check out Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic or DC's Wonder Woman animated feature, but I think your safest bet ...

Australia

This felt like it would be one of those epic films that came, saw, and conquered. In the past, Baz Luhrman has made some impressive shows, from star-crossed lovers to sexy dancing and pop tunes, but Australia never knew what it wanted to be, and suffered for it. As Jma wrote in his review: "It's too bad that he had to waste the all-encompassing title Australia on such a mixed mess." Skip it on DVD and Blu-ray.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua

Where one like Australia fizzled, Beverly Hills Chihuahua shocked even Eric D. Snider: "[it] isn't the braying, garish nightmare that the trailers make it out to be, or that we've come to expect from Disney's live-action-excrement factory." Rent it on DVD and Blu-ray.
