Well Done Documentary
11 February 2009 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Napoleon's Final Battle" is part of the National Geographic ICONS OF POWER series, and a fine episode it is. What I appreciated, besides the full-scale production values, is the way the various campaigns are clarified.

For the first time I could see the sequence of this leader's military maneuvers and the logic behind his strategies. There is a ploy of using the "final battle" as a take off point for flashbacks. This works up to a point; however, I think a more historical sequential approach might have worked as well.

Still, for its ability to convey a real feel for the time, place and motivation of a brilliant yet flawed leader, this is a very fine piece of work. Each military campaign is covered with great detail, and one gets a feel for living history, tragic as it is.

This episode comes across is pretty factual, as far as one can tell today. Which is to say, it vividly dramatizes what's written in history books. One can only assume those writings are indeed factual and not mixed with urban legend.
