Storyline

Brennan Huff and Dale Doback are both about 40 when Brennan's mom and Dale's dad marry. The sons still live with the parents so they must now share a room. Initial antipathy threatens the household's peace and the parents' relationship. Dad lays down the law: both slackers have a week to find a job. Out of the job search and their love of music comes a pact that leads to friendship but more domestic disarray compounded by the boys' sleepwalking. Hovering nearby are Brennan's successful brother and his lonely wife: the brother wants to help sell his step-father's house, the wife wants Dale's attention, and the newlyweds want to retire and sail the seven seas. Can harmony come from the discord? Written by <jhailey@hotmail.com>

Trivia

Chris Gardocki, Dale's bully, calls Brennan "butt buddy" during the playground scene. The last name "Buddy" was the name of Will Ferrell's character in Elf (2003). See more »

Goofs

Brennan is in Randy's office asking to be given the task of the Catalina Wine Mixer. Derek comes in and says to Randy, "Did you tell him the deal?", obviously making it clear he already knew that Brennan was given the job. However, after hearing Brennan out, Derek then decides to give Brennan the job. (In the DVD extras, this goof is explained because an alternate take (entitled "Catalina Heart Attack") shows Randy giving the job to Brennan without Brennan needing to ask for it, or repeat his request to Derek. Then Derek comes in and says the same line.) See more »

Do Americans have a sense of humour?
8 August 2009 | by See all my reviews

Anything from the Apatow stable is devoutly to be avoided by anyone with a sense of humour. Humour involves irony and social commentary, qualities entirely lacking in the Apatow opus. Apatow enjoys laughing at the idiot goyim and giggling about it all the way to the bank. In Apatow comedies, the joke is on the audience. Stepbrothers is more of the same. Two grown men try to do more inane things than each other while acting like nine year-olds. At some point Will Ferrell is sitting on the toilet with his drawers down. He reaches for toilet paper (so we know that he has had a bowel movement) and finds the roller empty. Looking round, he notes the rug that surrounds the pedestal and pulls it up. He is about to turn and wipe his rear with it when -- CLICK! --- I switch off the DVD player and the further adventures of these two morons will never be known.
