Live Action Bakugan Movie in the Works

23 December 2010 10:04 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Alright now I know what you're thinking... what the hell is Bakugan? It's a fairly new animated series that is a big hit with the kiddies right now, sort of along the lines of Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh and Avatar: The Last Airbender. The full title is Bakugan Battle Brawlers, and the show has a tie-in strategy card game where various creatures battle against each other... I'm sure you get the picture. It originated in Japan where it apparently flopped, and it wasn't until it started broadcasting in Canada and the U.S. that it became a big hit. And now they're bringing it to the big screen with the help of Harald Zwart, director of The Pink Panther 2 and The Karate Kid! Universal Pictures is the studio putting together the movie, with Scott Stuber on board as producer. Stuber is somewhat new to family-oriented films, having produced mainly R-rated movies like Role Models, »

Harald Zwart to Direct ‘Bakugan’

21 December 2010 4:19 PM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

The strategic game and anime series “Bakugan” will be coming to the big screen. Universal Pictures confirmed to TheWrap that Norwegian filmmaker Harald Zwart will be directing the film. It is not known on whether the film will be an animation or live-action. TheWrap described “Bakugan” featuring marble-like balls that transform into powerful monsters when rolled on game cards. Bakugan Battle Brawlers card game was named “Toy of the Year” by the Toy Industry Association for 2008 and 2009. Zwart previously directed “One Night at McCool’s,” “Agent Cody Banks,” “The Pink Panther 2,” and “The Karate Kid” reboot. So why not "Yu-Gi-Oh!," "Magic: The Gathering" or "Bella Sara" movies? Only time will tell.Source: TheWrap »

Harald Zwart Tapped To Direct ‘Bakugan’

21 December 2010 2:00 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

In Hollywood, it's never about what you've done, it's about what you've done lately. Before this summer, Harald Zwart directed One Night at McCool's, Agent Cody Banks and The Pink Panther 2. Not exactly box office or critical bonanzas. Still, he found himself in China directing the remake [1] of The Karate Kid for Sony. From a $40 million budget, that film made almost $400 million worldwide and now Universal is entrusting Zwart with one of their precious possible franchises. He's been tapped to direct Bakugan, based on the popular game and anime show Bakugan Battle Brawlers. Bakugan Battle Brawlers is a cartoon show that originated in Japan and airs on the Cartoon Network in America. It's about a group of kids who control "marble-like balls that transform into powerful monsters when rolled on game cards," according to The Wrap [2], which broke the news about Zwart. It's spawned video games, toys, and much more. »

Emily Mortimer: 'Secrets are a part of all of our lives'

8 July 2010 2:14 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Her new film is about a man with a secret son. So how did Emily Mortimer deal with acting in such familiar, familial territory?

Acting, according to Emily Mortimer, is a succession of platonic romances. A "weird flirtation thing" when Andy Garcia played a "sex-obsessed Italian detective" and she was a "nervous little French secretary" in The Pink Panther 2, led to her latest part in City Island. Here, Mortimer plays an aspiring actor who develops an intense friendship with a prison guard and repressed actor who is played, inevitably, by Garcia. "It's a very typical relationship that actors experience all the time," she says, words falling from her mouth in a skittish tumble. "You're put together in very intense circumstances with total strangers, very often from entirely different walks of life, apart from the fact you are both fucked-up actors. It hovers somewhere between romance and friendship. It's a platonic romance. »

The Karate Kid 1984 vs. 2010: Side-by-Side

11 June 2010 7:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If you were still growing up in or around 1984, like me you might still carry a torch for John G. Avildsen's The Karate Kid. It's hard enough to create one lasting tale of an underdog in such a dime-a-dozen genre, let alone the rarity of creating two of the best ever, along with Rocky. (Although David Anspaugh did a pretty nice job with Hoosiers and Rudy too.) The formula is almost always a done deal and we know it is going to end with a big game and a victory for our heroes. Remaking that formula with an already existing property seems doubly pointless and some of you, like me, wish you could join in the protest of remakes starting with one from the director of The Pink Panther 2. Even if you possess a mild curiosity towards the 2010 edition of The Karate Kid, you may as well save »

Karate Kid director fights for movie by thinking small

10 June 2010 3:57 PM, PDT | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

When director Harald Zwart (The Pink Panther 2) was preparing for his final pitch meeting on The Karate Kid remake, he knew he had to wow the powers-that-be at Sony Pictures. He was going up against another director with more experience in the underdog sports movie genre, so he decided to get creative and layout his vision for the film in a three-by-two-foot physical model.

Zwart and his wife trucked over to a model train store in Culver City and spent three long nights putting together a model of Mr. Han’s (Jackie Chan) courtyard where Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) trains in Kung Fu. »

Exclusive: The Karate Kid Director Harald Zwart

9 June 2010 | Comingsoon.net | See recent Comingsoon.net news »

When people watch Sony's upcoming remake of The Karate Kid , they may be surprised that it's directed by Harald Zwart, the Dutch/Norwegian filmmaker whose American output includes movies like One Night at McCool's , Agent Cody Banks , The Pink Panther 2 - let's just say they weren't the most critically well-received movies ever made. (Zwart also directed the Norwegian comedy hit with the unfortunate English title of Long Flat Balls .) The original "Karate Kid" came out in the summer of 1984, starring Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita and Elizabeth Shue, and it became a movie that really stuck with a lot of people, considered by some as a beloved favorite. The new version stars Jaden Smith, son of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, producers on the movie. He plays Dre Parker, a »

Third trailer for ‘The Karate Kid’ remake

8 June 2010 10:41 PM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

The Karate Kid, directed by Harald Zwart (The Pink Panther 2), stars Jaden Smith (son of actor Will Smith), Jackie Chan, and Taraji P. Henson, and tells the story of:

…Dre, a skateboarding video game buff who moves to China after his single mother is forced to go there for work. Unable to speak Chinese, Dre finds it hard to settle in, and gets beat up by the local bully. Chan plays Mr. Han, a maintenance man who spots his black-eye and offers to teach him both martial arts and Chinese, so he can defend against all the kung-fu students.

Sony have released a third trailer for the film which, unlike the previous trailers, focuses a lot more on the action – showing Dre competing in the martial arts championships and training with Mr. Han – and I have to say it looks pretty good, which is surprising.

Justin Bieber and Jaden Smith "Never Say Never" embedded music video from 'The Karate Kid'

2 June 2010 11:24 PM, PDT | Upcoming-Movies.com | See recent Upcoming-Movies.com news »

Check out the "Never Say Never' music video with Justin Bieber and Jaden Smith from Sony Pictures' "The Karate Kid." Very catchy, kids and teens will be toetapping to this one. The eagerly anticipated remake of the classic which starred Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita, opens on June 11th. Smith clearly worked very hard on the project and I must say, his skills look pretty decent. Harald Zwart ("Agent Cody Banks," "The Pink Panther 2," "One Night at McCool's" ) helms from the screenplay by Christopher Murphey and story by Robert Mark Kamen. In Columbia Pictures' The Karate Kid, 12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) could've been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother's (Taraji P. Henson) latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying - and the feeling is mutual - but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible »

New Interview: The Karate Kid Remake Director Harald Zwart

24 May 2010 6:55 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

A month ago, I went to the Sony lot in Culver City, CA for an interview with director Harald Zwart, who was working on their sound stages to finish the score for the upcoming remake of The Karate Kid. Now, Zwart's previous credits are Agent Cody Banks and The Pink Panther 2, but I was asked to interview him after seeing The Karate Kid (which I honestly really enjoyed). I think Karate Kid is a huge step forward for Zwart, showing that he's more than just a director of cheesy comedies, and I wanted to talk about all that he had to go to through shooting this movie with Jaden and Will Smith and Jackie Chan on location in China. Watch my full interview with The Karate Kid director Harald Zwart: For anyone interested, I've included a full transcript of the complete interview below, in case you'd like to »
