Twilight, GTA 5 named as top-selling entertainment of 2013

16 December 2013 1:50 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 and Grand Theft Auto 5 have dominated the entertainment sales charts for 2013.

The final instalment in the Twilight series led DVD and Blu-ray sales over the last 12 months ahead of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and Skyfall.

Family films including Wreck-It Ralph, Monsters University and Hotel Transylvania also performed strongly in the sales, according to Nielsen.

The top 10 DVD and Blu-rays of 2013 are:

1. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2

2. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

3. Skyfall

4. Wreck-It Ralph

5. Monsters University

6. Hotel Transylvania

7. Rise of the Guardians

8. Iron Man 3

9. The Croods

10. Star Trek Into Darkness

Call of Duty: Ghosts and Grand Theft Auto 5, both the latest instalments in long-running franchises, topped the 'most wanted' lists for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Grand Theft Auto 5 has yet to be confirmed for PC, but still managed to top this year's list for most-anticipated title.

Decoding the Golden Globes animation nominees.

12 December 2013 12:30 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Tim here. In hacking through the Golden Globes nominations this morning, Glenn asks, "The Wind Rises good for foreign language, but not animated? I'm going to assume they don't allow cross-over or else that's bit wacky." And indeed, (only animated films in English" is exactly the rule that the HFPA follows, though that doesn’t, to my mind, make it any less wacky.

Also a rule for the Golden Globes: there have to be 12 films submitted for consideration to trigger a five-wide set of nominees; anything less than that tops out at three. Makes the Academy’s own “16 candidates equals five nominees” rule seem measured and thoughtful, doesn’t it? In the seven years that the Globes have given out this category, their picks have only lined up exactly with Oscar twice. With the Academy looking to fill five spots to the Globes’ three, this will be the second time »

Adam Sandler Is The Worst Deal In Hollywood, According To Forbes

12 December 2013 8:05 AM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

The world spins, the sun rises and sets, and actors are often overpaid. These are universal truths and this week, Forbes has laid out for us who gets paid what and whether or not they’re worth it. Even some of the most popular names in Hollywood, like Adam Sandler, don’t always guarantee a box office hit. Despite this, they get paid on the promise and hope that they will, regardless of the actual merit of the work they produce.

For their Top 10 Most Overpaid Actors List, Forbes has calculated each star’s worth based on their last three projects through this past June. The company used data gathered from their Celebrity 100 research and Box Office Mojo “to calculate how much, on average, each star’s last three films earned at the box office per dollar of pay.”

According to Forbes, and this list, Adam Sandler takes the prize »

Sony Sets a Date for Hotel Transylvania 2

6 December 2013 12:35 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

It wasn't long after last year's release of Hotel Transylvania that Sony announced plans to re-open the doors of the titular hotel, as the mad monster party proved to be a monster hit.

If you've been looking forward to returning to the land where animated monsters roam free, you'll be pleased to know that a date has been set and some art revealed!

Reported by Collider, Sony has set a September 25, 2015, release date for Hotel Transylvania 2, and they also unveiled a wee bit of a taste of what we can expect from the film. Actually, it's pretty much just an image from the first film with Hotel Transylvania 2 attached to it, but it's a start!

No word yet on which cast members will be reprising their voice roles or who will be directing. All we know for now is that the sequel will return to the hotel owned by Dracula, »

Starz Hops Aboard Microsoft’s Xbox

3 December 2013 12:25 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Starz is finally bringing its authenticated video service to Microsoft’s Xbox — but not yet to the latest generation of the console.

The premium cabler’s TV Everywhere service for subscribers, Starz Play, is now available for the Xbox 360 videogame and entertainment system for no extra charge to Xbox Live Gold members.

Starz said it is developing an app for Xbox One — which Microsoft launched Nov. 22 — expected to be available sometime next year. The company also is developing support for its other authenticated online services, Encore Play and MoviePlex Play, slated for the first half of 2014.

Starz is still playing catch-up to HBO, which got started on its TV Everywhere strategy two and half years earlier. HBO, it’s worth noting, does not have an app for Xbox One yet; it introduced one for Xbox 360 in March 2012.

New ‘Moments Worth Paying For’ Trailer for The Lego Movie

29 November 2013 1:30 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Bringing the classic toy to the big screen for its first feature film, The Lego Movie has fast become one of the most anticipated animated movies of next year, and with good reason.

The first two trailers have been very promising, and everything else we’ve seen has just been gravy on top.

Now Warner Bros. has partnered up with FindAnyFilm to continue the latter’s successful Moments Worth Paying For campaign, bringing a brief but great new trailer for next year’s animated blockbuster.

The Lego Movie follows Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average Lego minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.

Sony Pictures Vows To Cut Costs $250M+ Through 2016

21 November 2013 10:42 AM, PST | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

At least $150M of the total will come from overhead and “operational efficiencies” with the rest from changes in procurement practices, CFO David Hendler told investors today at Sony‘s presentation about the entertainment business. “We’ve taken a hard look at head count.” It is also re-bidding contracts telling those wanting Sony’s business “to come to us with the most aggressive pricing possible.” He reiterated the company’s zeal to reduce film production costs, noting that actors and directors will profit after productions break-even and that Sony will “penalize talent for cost overruns.” Sony plans to ramp up animation, in part because talent costs are lower than they are for live action. Even so, Hendler says that the company will focus on long term profitability and will spend on initiatives that may “limit [Sony's] margins during the investment phase.” For example, between 2007 and 2013 the company spent $415M on media »

Film based on smartphone game about an idol-stealing explorer set to follow Angry Birds movie into production

Angry Birds film takes off

Frozen: watch the trailer for Disney's new animated film

Indiana Jones-style smartphone game Temple Run looks set to be the latest example of the form to make its way to the big screen, after Hollywood studio Warner Bros entered negotiations for a film version overseen by Harry Potter producer David Heyman.

The hugely popular Imangi Studios title looks rather more ripe for celluloid conversion than the upcoming Angry Birds. It centres on an explorer who is chased by demonic monkeys after stealing an idol from a temple. The film adaptation would follow much the same plot, though the demonic chasing entities are now described simply as "forces".

It's not the first time Temple Run has teamed up with Hollywood. Developers also released tie-in versions with Disney films »

Weekend Report: 'Ender' Wins Box Office 'Game,' 'Thor' Mighty Overseas

3 November 2013 12:10 PM, PST | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Ender's Game led the domestic box office this weekend, while Last Vegas narrowly beat animated disappointment Free Birds. Overall, the Top 12 earned $118.3 million, which is off five percent from last year. The big story this weekend, though, is the strong overseas debut for Thor: The Dark World. A week ahead of its U.S. release, the Avengers follow-up earned $109.4 million from 36 markets. Territory specific details, along with a long-term projection, can be found in the Around-the-World Roundup at the bottom of this report. At 3,407 theaters, Ender's Game took first place with a decent $27 million. While that pales in comparison to the likes of Harry Potter, The Hunger Games and Twilight, it is a bit of an improvement over past young-adult adaptations like The Golden Compass ($25.8 million) and Eragon ($23.2 million). It is worth noting, though, that adjusting for ticket price inflation those two titles had slightly higher initial attendance.Ender's Game »

5 Unconventional Family Movies to Watch at Halloween
