Land of Black Gold (Part 2 of 2)
31 March 2007 | by (the Mad Hatter's tea party.) – See all my reviews

Tintin and the Thompsons have weathered the storm and now have crashed their jeep into the town square. In a plea to release the Thompsons from prison, he waits outside for local Sheik Emir Ben Kalish Ezab, and he sees Dr. Muller leaving from his quarters. Tintin convinces Kalish Ezab not to deal with Muller and release the Thompsons. Though things aren't so merry when Kalish Ezab's son is kidnapped, and a letter is left from his opposition Shiek Bab El to sell his oil to "Speedol" if he wants to see his son. But Tintin believes it has something to do with Muller, and with the help of Senhor Oliveira da Figueira he gets into Muller's fortress and discovers his behind it all with his secret tablets and holding the son hostage.

"Land of Black Gold" is writer and illustrator Herge's fifteenth comic strip album of "The Adventures of Tintin" and the eleventh episode (part 2 of 2) of Season 2. Since we now know what Muller is behind, it turns into somewhat comedic kidnapping piece. There are some ingenuous actions, clever concept with a chaotic sense and the Thompsons (who are still about) are mainly replaced by Emir Ben Kalish Ezab's prankster brat son for the plate of gags. Haddock mostly misses out on this adventure, although he makes an a sudden appearance towards the end. Quite odd one I might add. Tintin also bumps into a friendly acquaintance in the name of Senhor Oliveira da Figueira. Most things are played on a high-note and never takes itself that seriously, this is one of it strengths you could say. Quite a cheerful, and suitably contemporary adventure for Tintin that steers towards a more grounded idea.
