On their way to Sydney for a conference on space exploration, Tintin, Captain Haddock and Calculus' flight stops off at Jakarta, before it will take off again. They bump into an old friend Scoot, who's now a pilot for an screwy millionaire Laszlo Carreidas. After his receives a good laugh caused by Calculus, he invites them to ride in his private jet, as he' heading to Sydney. Carreidas' assistant Spalding has some plans to hijack the plane, guided along by two new pilots. They land on a deserted island, where Tintin learns that Rastapopoulos is behind it all. Snowy gets away, but Tintin and the rest are kept locked up in bunkers. While, Rastapopoulos hatches a plan to steal Carreidas' doe, by using a truth serum to get him to give up his account number. But what he gets is not what he wants, and in his frustration, he's accidentally injected. The both of them get in a slinging match over how bad they are. Snowy comes to the aid of Tintin and co, and they go on to capture Rastapopoulos.
"Flight 714" is Herge's twenty-second comic strip album and the twelfth episode (part 1 of 2) of Season 2. Actually this was the first Tintin book that I ever read, which I hold as a sentimental favourite. I still think its pretty much middle ground compared to others, but what largely sets this one apart is its surreal pockets of ambiguous details. This doesn't make its way into the story, until part 2. The premise is elaborately linked with an unusual bunch of eccentric or shifty characters. While, it does seem more bleak and sedated in the action, the laughs are piled on rather heavy and in a goofy manner. Look at the serum injection moments. Just wait for humorous introduction of Rastapopoulos. Even Haddock feels like his kept on a leash, with his raging emotions not really boiling over. Some other characters from other stories make their way into the exotically deadly adventure, other than the reappearance of Rastapopoulos. Also appearing is the pilot Scoot (who's in Red Sea Sharks) and Captain Haddock's old sea buddy, turned nemesis Allan as a henchman. What starts off, it pretty ordinary, but it high on humour.
