Keshet Studios Eyes ‘Thank You for Smoking’ TV Adaptation as L.A. Scripted Arm Hits High Gear

23 March 2017 11:37 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Keshet Studios, the Los Angeles-based development arm of the Israeli powerhouse, is coming off its first full scripted development season with a trifecta of broadcast pilots and two cable series on the way.

TV biz vets Peter Traugott and Rachel Kaplan were recruited by Keshet in mid-2015 to focus on scripted development in the heart of the U.S. creative community. The pair have juggled a mix of home-grown development and projects that come through various channels of Keshet’s growing worldwide operation. Traugott is president of scripted for Keshet Studios; Kaplan is exec VP of scripted.

Traugott and Kaplan’s move to Keshet coincided with the industry’s increasing focus on fully packaged series projects being sent out for auction. The Los Angeles office is a lean operation with a handful of execs working with Traugott and Kaplan. But the ability to connect with the Keshet teams in Israel and London extends their talent-scouting ability and »

Hit Series ‘Fauda’ Tops Haim Saban’s List of Favorite Israeli Fare

22 March 2017 11:25 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Over the past decade, Israel has become a booming hub for creativity and the arts, from its hearty and lush technology sector to its rash of wildly successful television series being sold for adaptation to media markets around the world, including studios and production companies in the U.S., Japan, Russia, and South America.

For Haim Saban, Israel’s ever-rising prominence in the entertainment industry makes perfect sense given its status as a country that is a true international melting pot, with immigrants hailing from all four corners of the globe.

“It used to be that people lived off of the land, but Israel is a classic case of the land living off of the people,” says Saban. “It’s about the people, people that came from 70 countries, each one with his or her own culture and habits and somehow they managed to put together this miracle place. It is a miracle place.”

Top U.S. Media Execs Turn to Israel TV Conference for Guidance in Chaotic Times

8 March 2017 9:45 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Before President Trump used Twitter to label journalists enemies of the American people, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was picking fights with journalists on Facebook, his preferred social platform. Netanyahu has accused the owners of the left-wing daily Haaretz of having ties to the Nazis. And he has pursued an anti-tv-news vendetta so fierce it nearly shuttered one of the nation’s two news channels after it aired a series of investigative reports that were critical of the prime minister and his inner circle.

Such developments have drawn the attention of international media figures. This week, as Keshet Media Group — Israel’s undisputed television heavyweight — launched its fourth installment of Intv, its quasi-annual Jerusalem confab on innovation in television, it has among its participants for the first time CNN president Jeff Zucker, Fox Television Group CEO Dana Walden, and NBC president Jennifer Salke.

China Media Capital Chief on Hollywood Investment: ‘We Should Be Smart Money, Not Dumb Money’

6 March 2017 6:35 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Jerusalem — Reports of the Chinese-led invasion of Hollywood have been greatly exaggerated, China Media Capital chairman Li Ruigang told a Jerusalem audience on Monday at the Intv conference, a media confab devoted to innovation in the small-screen world.

In fact, he said, the so-called flood of wealthy financiers coming from the world’s most populous nation to buy up Hollywood are not a flood at all, but rather a trickle that treads with caution and is working to cultivate local partnerships on the ground in tandem with its injections of cash.

“I’ve read some articles about China’s invasion into Hollywood, and I actually don’t think they’re true,” said Li, one of China’s most influential businessman that has held stakes in DreamWorks Animation, the Manchester City Football Club and many more major companies. “China is not ready to take a big stake in Hollywood. Berlin: Hungary’s Enyedi Returns With New ‘Soul’

9 February 2017 10:12 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

In 1989, Hungarian director-writer Ildiko Enyedi delighted international festival audiences with her unique debut feature, “My Twentieth Century,” which went on to nab the Camera D’or at Cannes. The film’s theme of duality, its play with the possibility of the miraculous, a tone both exhilarating and disturbing and its phantasmagoric editing, have played a part in her subsequent features such as “Magic Hunter” (1994) and “Simon the Magician” (1999). These metaphysical signature elements play out in vastly different ways in her Berlinale competition contender, “On Body and Soul.”

“On Body and Soul” is based on the duality of sleeping and waking, mind and matter. It poses the question: What would happen if you met someone who every night dreamed the same dream as you and has been meeting you in that same dream world for years?

The odd twosome with the similar recurring dreams are Endre (Geza Morcsanyi), the director of an industrial slaughterhouse, »
