Underworld 4 Gets Swedish Directors

14 November 2010 6:31 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

With the vampire genre as strong and infused with pop culture as its ever been, it’s no surprise that Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment are working to bring back the Underworld franchise. All three movies to date, including the prequel Underworld: Rise of the Lycans which didn’t feature Beckinsale, have proven profitable on relatively lower budgets and earned a strong niche for their unique style and perspective on vampire/werewolf lore.

After an extended period of rumors and fan wishes, Kate Beckinsale is confirmed to return in Underworld 4, a movie which is hoped to spawn a second full Underworld trilogy. Now comes news that Swedish directors Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein have signed on to direct.

Heat Vision has the exclusive on on the franchise’s newest directors, who take over…

Swedish directors Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein will be in charge of Underworld 4 according to The Hollywood Reporter. Beckinsale's husband, Len Wiseman, directed the first two films and will be involved in Underworld 4 as a producer. Plot details haven't been disclosed yet, however it is known that in this fourth film of the successful vampire vs werewolf series, Selene will have a young daughter who is an integral part of the plot.

Swedish Helmers Bite into 'Underworld 4'

14 November 2010 12:27 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

A pair of Swedish directors, Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, have been confirmed as the directors of Underworld 4, which will see Kate Beckinsale return to the role of the Lycan-hunting vampire Selene for the first time since playing the character in Underworld: Evolution in 2006.

Beckinsale gave way to Rhona Mitra who played Sonja, the female heroine of the lackluster 2009 prequel story, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans.

Underworld 4 is already set for a January 20, 2012 release with production expected to begin in Vancouver in March 2011. Current expectation for the story penned by John Hlavin and polished by J. Michael Straczynski, is that it will serve as a prequel to 2003's Underworld and a sequel to 2009's Underworld: Rise of the Lycans.

As for Marlingd and Stein, they co-directed the Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers thriller Shelter, which was picked up by the Weinstein Co. for distribution, which means we »

Underworld 4 Imports Its Directors

13 November 2010 12:04 PM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Despite rumors that director Len Wiseman would return to direct Underworld 4 after skipping out for the third installment, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, it looks like Wiseman won't be taking the director's chair after all.

THR reports that Sony Screen Gems has hired Swedish directing team Mans Marlind and Björn Stein, who made their English-language directorial debut with the British thriller Shelter, to helm the sequel. Comic book writer and screenwriter J. Michael Straczynski is currently rewriting the script, from an original draft by Shield writer John Hlavin.

Franchise star Kate Beckinsale, who understandably skipped out on Rise of the Lycans due to it being a prequel, is set to return as the vampire Selene for the new sequel, which will start production next March in Vancouver, Canada. Underworld 4 (working title) is set to be shot in 3-D and will be released on January 20, 2012.

Kate Beckinsale Will Return for Underworld 4

7 October 2010 9:20 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

The Underworld series, not unlike the Resident Evil franchise, is another action/sci-fi property that was born at a time when Hollywood was still desperately trying to emulate The Matrix. Somehow the general public still has not gotten tired of seeing female leads wearing tight leather outfits and fighting through bullet time action sequences, and so now 7 or 8 years later we have a fourth Underworld movie finally gearing up in the wake of the success of Resident Evil: Afterlife. Yay. The hook this time around is that star Kate Beckinsale is going to return after sitting out the previous prequel, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. We first heard rumblings about Underworld 4 back in August of last year, when it was being reported that the movie would be shot in 3-D [1]. While they still haven't officially announced that part, I think it's probably a foregone conclusion. At the time, they »

He has toiled in the 2nd unit trenches on The Matrix , Ghost Rider and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans . Kate Beckinsale has signed a deal to star in the fourth Underworld film and reprise the role as the vampire Selene after skipping the third film in the series, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans.

Details surrounding the Underworld 4 plot are currently underwraps but a search is currently underway for an actress to portray Selene's daughter in the film as well as a director. Underworld and Underworld: Evolution director Len Wiseman will be one of the executive producers on the project.

It is currently unknown whether Lakeshore Entertainment and Screen Gems are willing to put in a little extra money for 3D after the previous films have cost in the neighborhood of only $35 million a piece to produce. After the box office success of Resident Evil franchise entering the third dimension with Resident Evil: Afterlife, I'm going to speculate that Selene and the other vampires and Lycans will be coming »

Kate Beckinsale Rejoins 'Underworld' For Fourth Installment

24 September 2010 6:01 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Vampires and Lycans, it's time to crawl back into your coffins and dodge those silver bullets: the original Death Dealer is back in action.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, actress Kate Beckinsale has agreed to return to the role of Selene for the fourth installment of Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment's "Underworld" film franchise. Shooting begins in March 2011 in Vancouver based on a script originally written by John Hlavin and revised by J. Michael Straczynski.

Beckinsale took a breather from the "Underworld" franchise by sitting out of "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" in 2009. A prequel to the first two "Underworld" films, "Rise of the Lycans" had a built-in reason to keep Beckinsale on the sidelines. In her place, actress Rhona Mitra occupied the leading lady role.

The return of Beckinsale to the "Underworld" series was long rumored, and now that it's official, speculation is bound to focus on whether or »

Kate Beckinsale Will Return for Fourth ‘Underworld’ Film

24 September 2010 5:23 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Usually when the central protagonist is absent from the latest entry in a franchise, that's a sign that it's on its last legs, and the studio is making a last-ditch attempt to milk it of all its remaining worth. One might've thought that was the case with Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, but lo and behold, Kate Beckinsale will portray the leather-clad Selene once again for the fourth film in the Underworld series, which has yet to be tagged with a generic, nondescript subtitle. Learn more after the break. Chud received confirmation of the casting in a press release, which shares a lot of other info that we already know, but makes no mention of the film being shot in 3D. Here's some great news for fans of the Underworld franchise, Kate Beckinsale has officially signed on to return as Selene in Underworld 4! I'm glad to see that she's going to reprise her role in this franchise, she was missed in the last film. We've known for some time now that she would return, but now it's officially official.

Underworld 4 was written by John Hlavin which had a little rewrite by J. Michael Straczynski. The film will be produced by Len Wiseman, the director of the first two Underworld films, but it looks like he won't be directing this time around as previously thought. Screen Gems and Lakeshore are currently looking for a director.

As you know Beckinsale appeared in both Underworld and Underworld: Evolution. She didn't return for 2009's Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. In the third film the a younger Selene appeared in flashbacks, where she was portrayed by Lily Mo Sheen, »
