I'm a fan of the Underworld franchise, though not Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, which starred Rhona Mitra rather than franchise centerpiece Kate Beckinsale, though Beckinsale returned for 2012's Underworld Awakening, which wasn't half-bad, and now we learn she's coming on for one more as a fifth film has just been greenlit. Titled Underworld: Next Generation, Beckinsale will return as the werewolf hunting vampire Selene with Anna Foerster set to direct. Foerster is best known as Roland Emmerich's cinematographer on the likes of Anonymous and White House Down and is also attached to direct Source Code 2, though I'm not holding my breath for that film's release. The news comes from The Hollywood Reporter that also says Insurgent star Theo James, who appeared briefly as fellow vampire David in Awakening, will reprise his role though James was asked about the possibility of returning earlier this year and told Digital Spy, »

We really prefer the Kate Beckinsale of "Laurel Canyon," "The Last Days Of Disco" and "Snow Angels" to the Hollywood version, because if you focus on “Pearl Harbor” and all those “Underworld” films it’s easy to forget that the English actress can really act when she choose to. But people gotta eat and it’s not every day that there’s a female lead in action/fantasy franchise heading towards its fifth installment. so perhaps in that regards, we can make some kind of concession. It’d been rumored in the past, but THR has confirmed that Beckinsale will return for the currently untitled and fifth installment of the “Underworld” series. Beckinsale mostly sat out of 2009's "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" though she did appear briefly. Once titled “Underworld: Next Generation," evidently that’s a hint at the plot that will pass the torch to apparently younger and hotter stars. »

While audiences have been calling for female directors to be given more opportunities to direct franchise films made by giant names such as DC and Marvel, Lakeshore Entertainment and Screen Gems have quietly stolen that thunder by tapping Anna Foerster to helm Underworld: Next Generation. The fifth instalment in this female-led action franchise will be the first in the series to be directed by a woman.
The franchise is characterised as an action-horror film series, and centres on a female lead named Selene (Kate Beckinsale). When she is first introduced in 2003’s Underworld, she is a vampire working to kill Lycans, because she believes they murdered her family. Over the course of the following three films – the second of which (2009’s Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans) is a prequel – a larger battle is revealed, in which vampires and Lycans are at war, until both species are eventually hunted by humans »

Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment are the makers behind the series, with the fifth film seeing the return of Beckinsale as Selene, the vampire death dealer caught in the midst of a long-standing war between vampires and Lycans. Anna Foerster, director of photography on White House Down, is set to direct the new instalment.
Underworld was released in 2003, followed by Underworld: Evolution in 2006, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans in 2009 and, most recently, Underworld: Awakening in 2012. All four films have grossed over $458 million at the worldwide box office.

In this day and age, where studios view every film as a potential franchise starter, it shouldn.t surprise me when I hear about an unexpected sequel. Still, every time there.s news about a new Underworld movie my first reaction is, "Really?" Well, Underworld 5, also known as Underworld: Next Generation, is indeed happening, and it will once again feature the true face of the franchise, Kate Beckinsale. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Beckinsale is set to reprise her role as the badass vampire Selene, who has appeared as the protagonist in three of the previous four installments. She sat out 2009.s Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. At this point in the franchise, she has a daughter with her lycan/vampire hybrid hubby Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman), though at the end of the last film, Underworld: Awakening, he is nowhere to be found, which will probably come into play at »
