Storyline

Town drunk Otis comes in for his weekly night in jail and is insistent that they wake him up a 8 a.m. the next morning. They do so and he will only tell them he's been working a second job and saving his money to acquire the one thing he has always wanted but has never had. When he shows up later that day with his new car, Barney is convinced that they have a new menace in town. Andy thinks Otis is a little more responsible than that but gives Barney the okay to follow him and see what he wants. When they see him pass out behind the wheel, they put him in jail and devise an elaborate scheme to get his to swear off driving. Written by garykmcd

Trivia

While Barney is giving Otis his "driving test" with toy cars, it is established that the wall behind the sheriff's desk is to the west. Earlier in the episode, when Otis walks down the sidewalk at 8am toward what must be the east, away from the sheriff's office, the sun is ahead of him, as it should be at that time of day. (Of course, the interior of the office set is on a soundstage, so any light coming through the windows is artificially produced.) See more »

Goofs

When Andy goes to Otis' cell to bring him a cup of water, he retrieves the cell keys from the wall between the cells where they are usually kept, opens the cell door and leaves the keys in the door. After giving Otis the water, he shuts the cell door, leaving the keys in it. He then returns to the back office. When Otis calls Andy again, this time implying a request for Andy to quote him 'Jack and the Beanstalk', Andy walks from the back office to the cell door, and again reaches up to the place on the wall where the keys are usually kept, opening the cell door with them. A must-see just to hear the song...
24 October 2010 | by (Bradenton, Florida) – See all my reviews

This is a wonderful episode--made even more so than one of the funniest scenes in the entire series taking place in this show. It begins with Otis, as usual, checking himself in to jail after a bender. The only difference is that the very drunk Otis insists he be woken up at 8am--he has something important to do. Barney and Andy figure that this is just the liquor talking and Barney insists they should make him up early just to teach him a lesson. Amazingly, Otis is grateful for the early wakeup and is readying to leave. When asked why, he tells them that he's been saving up for ages in order to buy a car!! Considering he's the town drunk, the idea of him drunk driving naturally scares the boys, so they decide on a very elaborate hoax to teach Otis a lesson. So, when they soon find him drunk and apparently about to drive a short time later, they drag him back to the cell and wait for him to awaken. When Otis does, Barney and Andy keep straight faces and behave as if Otis died! They talk about how they miss him and what a great guy he was. But it gets better when Barney and Andy begin singing a song to their 'dead' comrade--especially when Otis joins in with the song! It's hilarious--and made even more so by the punchline.

This is one you just have to see--clever, very funny and sweet.
