Beta Cinema has taken on world sales for Radu Jude’s Scarred Hearts.
The film is inspired by Romanian author Max Blecher’s novel of the same name, and is the story of a young man’s agony told in several episodes. The story is set in 1937 Romania as a young man spends his days at a sanatorium at the Black Sea coast, suffering from bone tuberculosis. Falling in love with another patient, he narrates his and his fellow patients’ attempts to live life to the fullest as their bodies slowly wither but their minds refuse to give in.
The film, now in production, stars Lucian Teodor Rus, Ivana Mladenovic and Ilinca Harnut. The Romanian-German co-production is produced by Hi Film & Komplizen Film with the support of the Romanian Cnc & Media Program.

Film industry veterans Pierre Menahem and Juliette Lepoutre have launched a new Paris-based co-production focused company called Still Moving.
“The aim is to first develop international co-productions, and eventually set up an international sales and distribution department, with a first slate of acquisitions to be announced in the coming months,” explains Menahem.
The pair, who previously collaborated at production and sales outfit Mpm Film in Paris alongside Marie-Pierre Macia, is in Berlin with two features which are currently in pre-production.
They comprise Romanian Radu Jude’s Scarred Hearts, which will be the director’s next production after Aferim!, which premieres in competition at the Berlinale this year.
Jude’s long-time producer Ada Solomon of Bucharest-based Hi Film is lead producing the feature.

New films by Mira Fornay, Radu Jude and Stephan Komandarev are among the projects to be pitched at this year’s Sofia Meetings (March 13-16).
The Plus Minus One line-up of eight projects includes the third feature from Slovakian filmmaker Mira Fornay. Cook, F—k, Kill (Frogs With No-Tongues) is an absurdist drama about domestic violence.
It follows her 2009 feature debut Little Foxes and 2013’s My Dog Killer, which won a Tiger Award at last year’s International Film Festival Rotterdam and was Slovakia’s submission for for the Best Foreign-Language Oscar.

The debut feature of India’s Anand Gandhi adds to prizes won in Dubai and Tokyo.
This year’s Transilvania International Film Festival (Tiff) came to a close at the weekend in Cluj-Napoca with the awarding of the main prize, the Transilvania Trophy, to Indian feature debutant Anand Gandhi’s Ship Of Theseus.
The Competition Jury - comprising directors Cristi Puiu and György Pálfi, UK producer Lynda Myles, German actress Franziska Petri and Tribeca’s Artistic Director Frédéric Boyer - said Ship Of Theseus was evidence of “a new major talent of world cinema”.
The film’s also won the Best Cinematography Award for the work of DoP Pankaj Kumar.
Both prizes were accepted in Cluj on their behalf by the film’s Hungarian sound designer Gabor Erdelyi who spoke about the shoot as being a life-changing experience.
Fortissimo Films is handling international sales.
