Owf’s 52 Must See Films of 2011

24 December 2010 11:00 PM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Usually around this time of the year we list maybe 10 or 20 films that we think are as absolute ‘Must See’s’ for what the next 12 months of cinema has to offer us but as the clock is ticking ever closer to midnight on 2010, we thought we would challenge ourselves a little further this time around. The question I posed to the Owf staff recently was… can Cinema in 2011 produce enough ‘Must See’ films to hit 52, which would ratio out to be just one film per week? That’s all we are hopeful for here… just one film every Friday that justifies us parting with our ever increasingly important cash in these tough economic times.

Did we manage to find 52? Kind of.

There’s certainly 52 films listed here but once we got to around 30, the whole thing became a struggle and we had to fill it out disappointingly with the usual array of over-budgeted summer spectacles, »

‘The Green Hornet’ Trailer #2 Looks More Promising

19 November 2010 1:30 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Early rumors pegged Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet as a lame campfest in the vein of Frank Miller’s woebegone adaptation of The Spirit. Sony Picture’s decision to delay the film’s release until January 2011 seemed to only confirm that it was a disaster in the making – one that would feature unnecessary post-production 3D as well.

A second theatrical preview for the Seth Rogen-starring comic book flick has been released and it does a better job of selling the movie as a competent mix of action and comedy than the first Green Hornet trailer did.

Here is the official Green Hornet synopsis, in case you’d forgotten:

Britt Reid (Rogen) is the son of La’s most prominent and respected media magnate and perfectly happy to maintain a directionless existence on the party scene – until his father mysteriously dies,…

Joel McHale to Host 2011 Film Independent Spirit Awards

17 November 2010 2:17 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Joel McHale has been tapped to host the 2011 Film Independent Spirit Awards.  McHale’s career has been heating up over the past year as he’s landed roles in The Big Year, What’s Your Number?, and Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World.  Of course, when you star on NBC’s Community, which is one of the best shows on TV, that helps.  Seriously, if you’re not watching Community, then you’re missing out.  Also, if you want more of McHale on a weekly basis, make sure you watch The Soup, which is the only reason to ever watch anything on E!

Hit the jump for press release.  Nominees for the 2011 Film Independent Spirit Awards will be announced on November 30th.  The ceremony will air on IFC on Saturday, February 26th at 10pm Et/Pt.

17 November 2010 2:16 PM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

IFC's slogan is "Always On, Slightly Off," but with the airing of the 2011 Film Independent Spirit Awards, they may be right on the money. The awards show won't be happening until February, but it's already got a big-name host: Community's Joel McHale. McHale, who is currently starring in the NBC comedy, also hosts E!'s The Soup, which humorously critiques television. The ceremony will air February 26 at 10/9c. Check out the press release below:

Film Independent, the non-profit arts organization that produces the Spirit Awards and the Los Angeles Film Festival, announced today that Joel McHale will serve as host for the 2011 Film Independent Spirit Awards.  The 26th edition of the awards will be held at the beach in Santa Monica on Saturday, February 26 at 2:00 p.m.  The ceremony will air exclusively on IFC in primetime on February 26 at 10:00 p.m. Et/Pt.

Paul Schrader Prepares The Jesuit

8 November 2010 7:49 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

A press release from Maya Entertainment has revealed that writer/director Paul Schrader's The Jesuit is finally underway. The thriller will mark the sixth time Willem Dafoe has worked with Schrader (seventh if you count The Last Temptation of Christ, which Schrader wrote but Martin Scorsese directed), and will co-star Michelle Rodriguez, Paz Vega (Sex and Lucia, The Spirit) and Manolo Cardona (Undertow). The official synopsis describes a revenge thriller about a man with a violent past, released from prison in southern Texas to find that his wife has been murdered and his son kidnapped. Our hero "must abandon his dream of happiness in an explosive return to methods that made him the most feared man in Texas, and earned him the nickname... The Jesuit." So far, so Steven Seagal, but we might have thought that from an early synopsis of David Cronenberg's A History of Violence, and look what happened there. »

Scarlett Johansson to Play an Alien in Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin

4 November 2010 9:38 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Good news... Scarlett Johansson has signed on to play an alien in an upcoming sci-fi drama Under the Skin. But not just any alien... a sexy alien! (As if she could play any other kind.) The film is being shopped around at the American Film Market this week, and the synopsis is as follows: "Johansson plays an alien on earth, disguised as the perfect aesthetic form of a mesmerizing woman. She scours remote highways and desolate scenery looking to use her greatest weapon to snare human prey -- her voracious sexuality. She is deadly efficient, but over time becomes drawn to and changed by the complexity of life on earth. With this new found humanity and weakening alien resolve, she finds herself on a collision course with her own kind. Taking her point of view throughout, the film presents a unique look at our world through alien eyes." The movie »
