Blu-ray: ParaNorman is an unsung animated gem

There was a time when I was in love with stop motion animation. It was the era of Gumby, Rudolph: the Red-Nosed Reindeer and The Year Without A Santa Claus. However, over the past two decades, CG has slowly nudged stop motion out of mainstream family entertainment.

When you think of the top animated movies of 2012, Brave or Wreck-it Ralph probably come to mind. Superb CG and the Disney distribution label made these films household names. Yet, in the trenches of cinema, where only the most audacious viewers dare to go, another feature was the unsung animated gem of the year. Laika’s ParaNorman coupled a delightful voice cast with a layered story that was chock full of spooky twists. This thrilling adventure is filled with wonderful, hand-made character models and smart comedy. Thanks to the team at Laika, the beating heart of stop motion lives on.

CBS romps Mon., 'Deal' tops shows
NEW YORK -- CBS romped to a win in primetime Monday in both viewership and the adults 18-49 demographic, while NBC's Deal or No Deal continued to ring up ratings.

NBC's schedule got pumped up by another round of Deal or No Deal (16.5 million, 4.5/12), which was the night's most-watched show. But instead of Heroes and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, NBC averaged 7.4 million viewers and a 2.5/6 for the TV movie The Year Without Santa.

CBS started slow in the 8 p.m. hour, with How I Met Your Mother (8.8 million, 3.0/9) hitting its lowest demo rating for an original episode so far this year. The Class averaged 8.7 million, 3.1/8) at 8:30 p.m. before 9 p.m.'s Two and a Half Men, which averaged 15.8 million viewers and a 5.2 rating/13 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research.

CBS remained on top with The New Adventures of Old Christine (12.1 million, 4.2/11), easily defeating Supernanny (8.7 million, 3.3/8) and a House repeat as well as the first hour of the TV movie The Year Without Santa.

And 10 p.m.
