"He was a genius . . . "

Warning: Spoilers
" . . . I never worked with anyone like him," concludes GOLDENEYE director Martin Campbell about long-time James Bond film series model constructor Derek Meddings, who died about a month after the this film shoot wrapped. With similar credits for BATMAN, SUPERMAN, KRULL, HUDSON HAWK, and TV's DR. WHO, Mr. Meddings essentially was the Wizard of Tiny Town. Maybe the Spoiler of Smallville would be more apt when it came to the Bond flicks, as most of his creations get blown up before they've been on the screen very long. Mr. Campbell refers to the chemical weapons lab built into the dam shown during GOLDENEYE's Pre-Titles sequence (blown-up), the Siberian radar station (blown up), and the giant dish in Cuba (actually a real installation in Puerto Rico), blown-up (Derek's miniature, NOT the real thing). Mr. Campbell estimates about three-quarters of the climactic scenes with the giant dish consist of miniature shots (as it's easier to destroy a scale model than a multi-billion dollar government facility). R.I.P., Mr. Meddings.
