Whatever It Is, It Is!

A drug deal goes sour in an alleyway in Chinatown. Veteran cop Jack Narin (Jason Miller) who happens on to the scene discharges his sidearm during the ensuing shoot out. The result is multiple bodies, a wounded drug-lord (Geza Kovacs) who won't talk and an undercover cop (Clark Johnson) who was surveilling the scene but ended up with more questions than answers.

Narin, a patrolman and 'cop's cop' who has worked out of the Midsouth precinct alongside Detective Kevin O'Brien (Scott Hylands), his partner Detective Frank Giambone (Jeff Wincott) and their colleagues for years is not merely well-respected but highly popular.

They do not want to think anything untoward on his part has occurred particularly since the Special Investigations Unit has already all but put him in for a commendation - one that his long record of service suggests he deserves. It has gone beyond remembering birthdays or going for drinks with co-workers. When they go to work he is one guy they look forward to seeing.

Gloria (Cynthia Dale) a young stripper was involved in the drug deal and made off with the drugs. Narin claims he didn't see her but obviously would have had to. What this good cop and much beloved nice guy is doing and why he is doing it is the big question. His friends are afraid to know and hate to ask.

Brilliant character Geza Kovacs who plays drug-lord Mel Raymond in this appeared on six episodes of Night Heat as five different but similar characters. Denis Forest who plays young drug hustler Gil Flowers appeared on four episodes of Night Heat as four different characters.

The series only ran for four seasons so you can imagine the effect on the viewer watching first run episodes as well as reruns and seeing the same actors multiple times as different characters.

The deja vu effect could be confusing if you track one plot line thinking it is part of another from seeing familiar faces in similar roles. It can be even more difficult when the plot lines are also similar.
