Gabriel Sherman Named Contributor At NBC News, MSNBC

6 September 2016 2:55 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

CNN has Brian Stelter. Fox News Channel has Howard Kurtz. And now, NBC News and MSNBC will be able to tap the perspective of Gabriel Sherman for stories related to media and politics.

Sherman, a national editor at New York magazine and the dutiful chronicler in recent months of growing dysfunction at Fox News Channel, will serve as a contributor to NBC News and MSNBC, according to an NBC News executive.  He has seen the prominence of his byline grow recently, due in no small part to his reporting on what might best be termed “L’Affair Ailes” taking place over the course of this summer at Fox News Channel. Sherman, who wrote an unauthorized 2014 biography of former Fox News chief Roger Ailes, has doggedly covered the executive’s dismissal from the cable-news outlet he helped grow after growing accusations that he harassed a number of female employees at the network. Ailes »

Fox News Tops All of Cable Viewership for Quarter; CNN Up Triple-Digits in Primetime

29 March 2016 12:28 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

As the presidential primary races heated up, cable news networks scored some big ratings achievements this winter, highlighted by Fox News Channel’s first-ever quarterly total-viewer victory among all cable networks and CNN’s most-watched quarter in seven years. All three cable news networks saw nice spikes, but CNN’s were by far the largest, as the network — buoyed by more debates and town hall events than its rivals —  closed the demo gap with Fox News and pulled away from MSNBC.

The first quarter of 2016 was highlighted by surprisingly strong performances in primary races by Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders, the former the Republican front-runner and the latter giving Hillary Clinton a tougher battle than expected on the Democratic side.
