Did You Know?

The Rutherfords apparently are now living in the house formerly occupied by Penny Woods's family. When Beaver stops by Penny's house in Leave It to Beaver: Beaver's Doll Buggy (1961) he and Penny are seen in front of the garage, with a rock wall behind Penny. Later, Penny's mother comes out onto the front porch to ask if the kids want refreshments. Here, Wally and Eddie are seen in front of the same garage and rock wall, working on Lumpy's car, and Fred comes out onto the same front porch to check on their progress. See more »

When Eddie comes over at dinner time he, Wally and Beaver go upstairs. As they start to climb the stairs the boom mic is plainly visible at the upper left of the screen. See more »

Wally Cleaver: Hey Eddie, what happened to your back seat covers?
Eddie Haskell: Search me. They were there last week.
Wally Cleaver: I hope your battery's not dead.
Eddie Haskell: Now how could it be dead? I just took it out of my father's car this morning.

Lumpy is over at Wally's and he's doing something to Eddie's car. Eddie and Wally are supposed to be going out to meet girls: Eddie figures with Wally along the girls won't immediately move away. When Eddie starts his car, the engine begins to whistle then smoke pours out. Wally thinks it's a pretty good joke and then offers to use his car. When Wally starts his car, the same thing happens; Lumpy has struck twice in the same driveway.

At dinner, Beaver is talking about the joke. There was so much smoke it was like being in The Longest Day. Nothing serious was done to either car. Ward starts to relate one of his practical jokes, but June stops him. Eddie stops by to see Wally and impresses the Cleavers with his "adult" response to the joke; but when the guys go upstairs in Wally's room, Eddie is all for plotting a revenge joke.

Eddie's suggestions are all pretty dangerous, until Eddie suggests they tie a chain to a tree and the other end around the axle of Lumpy's car, he will be unable to move. Wally believes that sounds safe enough.

The boys are setting up the joke; but Lumpy hasn't appeared. Eddie calls Lumpy pretending to be Julie Foster. She needs Lumpy's help; he'll be right over. After Lumpy starts the car, he pulls into the street and the entire rear axle, tires and all, comes off. Not so funny now.

Fred Rutherford isn't amused; and the chain has Ward's name on it. Lumpy says it must be Eddie and Wally. Fred wants to know why Lumpy mentioned Eddie. What did Lumpy do? Now Wally knows he's on the hook to pay for repairs. Especially when Fred comes over with Ward's chain. Wally confesses saying they thought it was going to be a funny joke. Wally figures he and Eddie can repair the damage. Eddie comes over to ask Wally to a ball to a ball game; nope, we will be fixing Lumpy's car. No way, they can't connect us to that; just then Ward arises from the couch. He's on the phone with Fred telling him Wally and Eddie will be there Saturday.

All Eddie wants to know is how did they get caught. Don't use a tow chain with Ward Cleaver's name on it.

June wonders if Wally and Eddie can fix the car; Ward figures the boys will find out the answer to that pretty quickly. If dirt and grime are indicators of success, then the car should run. Fred comes out and asks if the boys have learned not to do practical jokes; yes sir, Eddie believe Lumpy has learned not to put cherry bombs in other people's cars too. Fred tells Lumpy if he started it then he should work on the car with the boys. Wally asks Mr. Rutherford a favor. He and Eddie are doing a pretty good job, so please don't make Lumpy help us.

It appears the car is running fine, Wally learned his lesson. Would Beaver play a joke on Wally?

A sort of filler episode. I know it's been a running theme that Wally likes working on cars, but this job would have really requited a serious mechanic. At the conclusion, all is forgiven. Lumpy drives over to see Wally and Eddie, he needs a favor. He put his tuba in the car, then he put the top up. Now he can't get the top down or the tuba out. Lumpy just doesn't disappoint.
