Andy Sachs (Hathaway) is a budding journalist but goes to work for Miranda Priestly (Streep) who is the Queen of Fashion with her Runway Magazine, and who is a very demanding boss. Andy knows nothing about fashion so why does she apply for a job as Miranda's 2nd Assistant? Well, she has a plan.
I haven't seen an actor own a role like Streep's Miranda since Tim Curry's Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. WOW! Meryl Streep has invented a new persona who talks softly and expects her every word to be memorized and adhered to immediately.
The two things that make this movie work are Meryl Streep's character, of course, but also the dialogue throughout. The writing is fantastic. And, what makes the writing so good is that it is subtle and brutally honest. The comedy also comes with put-downs of Andy's lack of fashion sense and also in Miranda's commentary on almost anything she deems important. She is the most composed person I have ever seen in a character. She is perfect. You may think of her as mean, and she is, but she is (the devil) the one who tempts everyone to getting what they want as long as she gets what she wants. Yes, she is the Devil and she loves to tempt people. And, if you don't comply, then good-bye.
All of supporting cast characters beginning with Nigel (Stanley Tucci) are brilliant. Andy (Hathaway) is terrific as the fashion novice who learns the hard way what it takes to work in the fashion world and for someone like Miranda. Emily (Emily Blunt), the 1st Assistant to Miranda and Christian Thompson (Simon Baker) are both terrific as well. We like Emily because she is the only one who shows agitation and she is funny doing it. Andy doesn't let off steam although you know she wants to, but Emily comes through for us big time. Well someone had to. Simon Baker is always good and we wish he had a show or movie of his own. He was great in the Guardian TV show a while back.
Yes, Meryl Streep should win an Oscar hands down for Best Actress. Her Miranda is a joy to watch, and you always expect her to lose her cool and you wait for it to happen. What a performance. You have never seen anything like it. Trust me.
Now, what is Prada? I have no idea except it may be high fashion that can be bought off the rack.
