While on a break from her job at a department store as one of Santa's helpers, Ann tells Donald about a Christmas she spent with one of her students while she was a teacher at a boarding school. A little boy name Tommy, who has always spent Christmas in hotels, is stuck at the school while his parents finish working on a movie. Since she's isn't allowed to bring him home with her, Ann stays at the school with him to give him his first happy Christmas.
While working as a department store Santa's helper, Ann receives an unexpected Christmas gift from a woman in line. Don, who witnesses the transaction, learns from the woman that the gift is because of the time Ann spent with her son Tommy Phillips. Ann assures Don that when she knew Tommy three years earlier, he was a young boy and not a young suitor. The story... Ann was in her final term teaching at a boarding school, where then eight year old Tommy was one of her students. Tommy had never had a merry Christmas since his parents, both actors, were always on movie sets during Christmas. That year ended up being no exception. Not wanting to see Tommy alone at the boarding school with Mr. Carson, the school's caretaker, on Christmas, Ann, who was not allowed to take Tommy home with her due to liability issues, decided instead to stay at the school to spend Christmas with Tommy. Beyond the issue of needing to be the sole grown up in a scary old building as Mr. Carson was allowed to go home for the holidays, Ann struggled to make it indeed a merry Christmas for Tommy. But she sacrificed her own merry Christmas to ensure that Tommy got one.
