With great power...

Plot; Student Peter Parker gains extraordinary powers when he's bitten by a radioactive spider.

That thing on the floor is my jaw. I came into this origin story episode (oddly placed at the beginning of the second season) expecting a watered down version of Spider-Man's origin. Surely they weren't going to have Uncle Ben be murdered were they? Yes. Yes they did.

This episode stays more or less true to the origin story in Amazing Fantasy #15. Peter is a science whiz who's bitten by a radioactive spider, gaining amazing abilities. He initially sees this as a way to make money to help out his aunt and uncle who've raised him, but when he blithely fails to stop a fleeing robber, he learns one of the most famous lessons in all of pop culture. That with great power there must also come--great responsibility. The early stuff is handled quite well, with Peter getting his powers and coming to grips with what's happened. But the last few minutes, when he learns of his uncle's murder (which is in no way sugar coated) and sets out to capture his killer, it really does go to another level.

Exploring this series has been fun. I love the animation and the jazzy score. But here it's more than just a nostalgia trip. This is a genuinely good episode and well worth a watch for Spidey fans.

The one and only original !

Warning: Spoilers
This is where Spidey began for me. I remember being up every Saturday morning camped in front of the TV waiting for this to come on! Bear in mind this was over 30 years ago! I saw other super heroes but none struck me or interested me like this. I've only recently watched this series again and I love it! A lot of new cartoons are not over the top and even a little corny, which I think is an integral part of a superhero production. The TV series Batman is a perfect example. This particular episode dealt with how Peter got his powers which, thankfully the movie followed fairly accurately. The story of how uncle Ben died and Peter's realization of his powers and the responsibilities that come with them was bang on in both too. Just love this cartoon and hope all the baddies turn up in the movies!!!
