Review: Lbj, Rob Reiner's Pleasant History Lesson

Now in the autumn of his entertainment career, Rob Reiner has proven himself to be a more than capable filmmaker over the past three decades. His early films -- from This Is Spinal Tap (1984) through to A Few Good Men (1992) -- helped to define an era that endorsed smart entertainment for adults. After stumbling with North (1994), he snapped back with The American President (1995); thanks in large part to Aaron Sorkin's crisp, timely original screenplay, the film caught the tenor of the times with a seamless blend of comedy, drama, romance and politics. Since then, Reiner has struggled to recapture the magic of those earlier times. Other than the financial success of The Bucket List (2007), a big-screen sitcom, his recent films...

Jennifer Lopez to Topline and Produce Rom-Com “Second Act”

Jennifer Lopez in “The Boy Next Door”: Universal Pictures

Jennifer Lopez is returning to romantic comedies. The “Shades of Blue” actress and multi-hyphenate has signed on to star in and produce STXfilms’ “Second Act,” a rom-com about a woman over 40 beginning a new career. This news, reported by Variety, means Lopez may have another title to add to her list of much-loved films like “The Wedding Planner” and “Maid in Manhattan.”

Second Act” will see Lopez playing “a big box store employee who reinvents her life and her lifestyle, which gets her the chance to prove to Madison Avenue that street smarts are as valuable as a college degree,” Variety summarizes.

The rom-com was penned by Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas — a producer on several of Lopez’s projects like “The Boy Next Door,” “Shades of Blue,” and a couple Lopez concert docs — and Justin Zackham (“The Bucket List”). Peter Segal (“Shameless,” “50 First Dates”) will helm the project. Goldsmith-Thomas, Zackham, and Benny Medina will produce alongside Lopez.

“There are so many things I love about this project and script,” Lopez commented. “People try to put women to sleep at a certain age. ‘Second Act’ is a story that empowers the every woman to do more, to be more, and not limit their dreams. I am thrilled to partner with Stx as they continue to create and empower the female audience.”

Second Act” is part of Stx’s push for more female-led content. The Jessica Chastain-led “Molly’s Game,” about Olympic hopeful turned high-stakes poker game player Molly Bloom, “Bad Moms” sequel “A Bad Moms Christmas,” and R-rated puppet comedy “The Happytime Murders” starring Melissa McCarthy are among the company’s slated women-centric projects.

You can catch Lopez next in NBC’s 2018 musical event “Bye Bye Bird Live!” She’ll also topline and exec produce the HBO film “Cocaine Godmother,” about the famed criminal Griselda Blanco. Lopez is also a series regular on NBC’s “Shades of Blue.” The third season of the police procedural will air Sundays beginning in 2018.

Lopez earned a Golden Globe nod in 1998 for her portrayal of Tejano music star Selena Quintanilla-Pérez in “Selena.” “It was a meaty role, but it was few and far between, especially for Latinos to have a role like that,” Lopez has said about the film. “I think it’s still challenging for women, especially being Latina. Thinking about ‘Selena’ 20 years ago and to have a role like that, I was very lucky. I was very fortunate. But it’s still a struggle for women.”

Jennifer Lopez to Topline and Produce Rom-Com “Second Act” was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Smurfs & Gramps Take One Last Swing At Box Office -- The Weekend Warrior

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.

Three New Movies May Have Trouble Making Much of a Mark

After a couple impressive March weekends with one new box office record, and a couple impressive openings, we’re now into April, and of the new movies, there just doesn’t seem like anything can defeat last week’s powerful duo of DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby--which exceeded all predictions with $49 million, taking the top spot from Beauty and the Beast. Ghost in the Shell didn’t even do as well as I thought it may, opening with just $19 million, those late reviews helping to kill its weekend.

Sony Pictures Animation are giving the loveable blue Smurfs a third go at American audiences with The Smurfs: The Lost Village (Sony), after two previous movies,

‘Boss Baby’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Will Battle Again For Box-Office Bragging Rights

‘Boss Baby’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Will Battle Again For Box-Office Bragging Rights
The Boss Baby” (20th Century Fox) and “Beauty and the Beast” (Disney) should take the top slots this early spring weekend, but the DreamWorks Animation comedy isn’t guaranteed to hold on to number one.

We’re in the middle of staggered school spring vacation season, so family-oriented films abound. That explains Sony’s release of “Smurfs: The Lost Village,” which looks to do best among the three new wide releases. However, “Going in Style” (Warner Bros.) and “The Case for Christ” (PureFlix) are less predictable with their respective older and faith-based core audiences.

This looks like another weekend that will outpace last year’s, when the top 10 grossed $91 million; expect this one to reach at least $100 million.

Alec Baldwin as an overgrown, big-mouth animated infant bested the third week of “Beauty” by $5 million,

Coming Distractions: Legion’s Dan Stevens gets too ambitious for his own good in The Ticket trailer

Usually, a movie in which the main character has some sort of notable health condition revolves around their struggle to either beat it or keep living in the face of the daily struggle (see: 50/50, The Bucket List, Soul Surfer—actually, don’t see Soul Surfer). But The Ticket takes the miraculous healing of a blind man as merely the jumping-off point for a much more ambiguous tale of what to do after you’ve triumphed. Dan Stevens (Legion) plays the protagonist as a man who rebounds from his surprise recovery by turning into an aggressive overachiever at work, only to see his personal life start to fall apart as a result. It’s the kind of story that sounds like after-school-special-schmaltz, but nothing about the trailer suggests any kind of moralistic simplicity. Instead, it all plays like an eerie thriller, one in which all the routines of home ...

The original movie, directed by Maren Ade, follows a father trying to get back in contact properly with his daughter. To do so, he creates a fictional life coach – that’d be Toni – who starts to cause no shortage of mayhem for his daughter’s work life.

No director or screenwriter has been attached to the production of the remake as of yet, but two major pieces of casting are already in place.
