Blu-Ray Review: ‘Step Up 3’ Delivers Exactly What it Promises

30 December 2010 6:01 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – “Step Up 3” is not a film so much as a slickly photographed collage of superbly performed dance sequences. Its structure harkens back to the golden age of screen musicals where the plot merely functioned as an intermission between numbers. There’s no need to visit the previous “Step Up” installments before stepping into this one, since their plots are more or less identical.

“SU3” merely aspires to entertain by utilizing the human body as its central special effect. The result is an irresistible burst of spirit-lifting escapism that sends the audience out on a wave of good feeling. Though the film’s acclaimed 3D visuals are available on a separate Blu-Ray edition, the stellar HD picture quality on the 2D version is second to none, while Ken Seng’s cinematography places the performers front and center, providing viewers with what feels like the best seat in the house. »

[Voting Spirit] It Begins

20 December 2010 8:40 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

As an Ifp member, each year I receive the great honor/perk of voting for the Independent Spirit Awards. Every year thirty-some films are nominated for the Spirits, and every year I try valiantly to see them all by the end of February, so that I can responsibly vote for each possible category.

I have yet to reach this goal.

Why? Well, despite Ifp’s aim to make all the eligible films accessible to the voting viewing public, it’s often difficult to maneuver the screening schedule, much less maintain sanity while watching a steady onslaught of dramas too bleak for mainstream audiences. This means I usually miss a few, and I refuse to vote for a category unless I’ve seen all the films within it.

Still, each year my heart flutters when the nominees are named and I eagerly make notes and scrawl out schedules to better manage the marathon of indie-movie watching. »

Announcing the 2011 Grammy Award Nominees!

1 December 2010 11:42 PM, PST | BuzzSugar | See recent BuzzSugar news »

We're slowly inching closer to award season, and tonight we learned who scored nominations for the biggest ceremony in the music industry: the Grammys. Last year was all about the ladies, but this time around the men are stepping up. Eminem got the most nods with eight, including song of the year and record of the year, while newcomer Bruno Mars nipped at his heels with seven nominations (guess he's not just popular among the Glee club). Speaking of the gleeks, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the cast was recognized all on their own, for their "Regionals version" of "Don't Stop Believin'" and best soundtrack. Just because the men came out on top this year doesn't mean the ladies won't be represented. As usual, Lady Gaga got plenty of recognition, along with Katy Perry and Rihanna. Other nominees that got me smiling are Arcade Fire, who picked up »

The 53rd Annual Grammy Award nominations were announced Wednesday, Dec. 1 on CBS. The awards themselves air February 13, 2011- and with nominees like these, it's sure to be quite a show.

Nominee Katy Perry was on hand to perform.... and to comment after receiving her Album of the Year nomination. "It's like no other awards show because I feel like you're being recognized by your peers, so when they nominate you, it's kind of like a win," she says. "But if I win, I won't say that."

Eminem received the most nominations with 10. Behind him, Bruno Mars got 7 and Jay-z, Lady Antebellum and Lady Gaga each received six nominations. Craig Ferguson was floored by his first nomination in the Spoken Word category - he tweeted, "I just got nominated for a damn Grammy. Take that low self esteem. #f***yeah." Only, you know... without the asterisks.
