Spaceman: A Baseball Odyssey -- Throughout the 1970's, Bill Lee was the ultimate gonzo baseball player, a brilliant left-handed pitcher who flouted every manager or
front office executive who tried to control him. The fans loved him
and so did the sportswriters who delighted in asking the usual
baseball questions, only to get philosophical responses involving the
relationship between Camus and the curveball or the effects of karma
on a pitcher's rotator cuff.

Blacklisted from professional baseball in 1983, Lee was left to roam
the world in search of a chance to play the game he loves. The film follows Lee, approaching sixty
years young, on a road trip from his farm in Vermont to the
impoverished baseball mecca of Cuba and on his triumphant return to
Fenway Park.relationship between existentialism and the curveball or the effects of karma on a pitcher's rotator cuff.

Bill Lee in Cuba, 13 July 2006
Author: alan-4 from Boston MA

I love Bill Lee. I love him. And not just because I'm a Red Sox fan and a Yankee hater. In case you're not familiar with him, Bill Lee ("The Spaceman") is a dope-smoking commie who was a Yankee-killer during his 10 years with the Sox as a left-handed junk-ball pitcher. As a baseball-loving leftist toker myself, I can't get enough of old Bill, and this film follows him from his homestead in rural Vermont to the ballfields of Cuba, where he and a senior team from San Diego take on Cuban retirees, with some old footage thrown in. It's a great introduction to one of baseball's most endearing guys, a real free spirit.

!viva Bill Lee!
