Honey and Sting focuses on the journey of a bumblebee through different segments, each featuring themes such as obsession, ecstasy, etc. It's refreshing to see a short British film with so much optimism despite having some dark themes. The principals of storytelling are similar to those in a Woody Allen or Robert Altman film, but in this case the audience follows an insect for a day, so the stories are somewhat voyeuristic. The segment which stood out for me what of the young female student's fantasy involving her teacher. It could have gone in the direction of American Beauty, but managed to remain breathtakingly sexy and surreal while remaining realistic.
Sybil Mair's vision for a first time filmmaker is bold, beautiful and equally seminal, and her impressive ensemble cast all do a fantastic job. The cinematography is stunning, as is the sound and editing. A very nice film, with some excellent drama. Sexy, funny, dark, obscure. A real treat.
