The San Francisco sanitation union has gone on strike, demanding better pay from the city. As a result, garbage collection has stopped and the streets are now lined with trash bags. Monk, naturally, has a hard time dealing with the stench. Things get worse, though, when union boss Jimmy Cusack is found dead in his office of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, bringing negotiations to a halt. Monk finds evidence of foul play, but the stench causes him to make outrageous accusations against the mayor, and even Alice Cooper. Written by

This episode contains a few "firsts": This is the first episode to have more than one "Here's What Happened" sequence. In fact, it has three. This is the first time that Monk has let his morals slip (not that it was intended, keep in mind the fact that the city reeks of garbage). See more
The press hears the mayor is a suspect in a murder because the detectives were speaking in the "whisper spot." San Francisco's City Hall does not have a whisper spot. This feature is in the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington D.C. See more
