Dread Central's Best and Worst of 2011

27 December 2011 7:06 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Well, folks, 2011 is officially in the can, and surprisingly it wasn't such a horrendous year. It was definitely better than 2010, which was a huge step up from the putrid 2009. We laughed, we applauded, we were left dumbstruck, and of course we were infuriated. Read on for our cheers and jeers!

Now, with a fresh movie-watching start before us, we're taking our usual yearly look back at the good, the bad, the Wtf, and everything in between.

And don't be lazy by just reading along! Get off of your asses and give us your lists in the comments section below. We wanna hear from you if only to compare notes. Lots and lots of notes.

Speaking of notes, the most common complaint we've heard over the years is that we don't have one definitive list representing Dread Central as a whole so for 2011 we dropped everyone's choices in the blender, hit puree, »

Syfy Finds Director for Video Game-Linked TV Series Defiance

8 December 2011 3:30 AM, PST | ScifiMafia | See recent ScifiMafia news »

We told you back in June about a very cool enterprise that Syfy was working on with Trion Worlds that would link a massively multiplayer online video game with a TV series, such that gamers could and would affect what was happening with the TV series, and vice versa. The series and the game are therefore both named Defiance.

Variety now reports that Syfy has hired their director, and it’s Scott Stewart (Priest, Legion). As we told you in our first report, the series is to be written by sci-fi veteran Rockne S. O’Bannon (Farscape, Warehouse 13).

Here is what Syfy said about the project in a press release last summer:

Set on a future Earth, Defiance introduces players and viewers to a world where humans and aliens live together on a planet transformed by decades of conflict. The game combines the intense action of a “Aaa” console shooter, »

Priest’s Comic Book Roots: A Movie Review

24 November 2011 4:00 AM, PST | 28 Days Later Analysis | See recent 28 Days Later Analysis news »

Director: Scott Charles Stewart.

Writers: Cory Goodman, Min-Woo Hyung (graphic novel).

Cast: Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet and Maggie Q

Mid-way into the 2011 year was another horror dystopia flic called Priest. It featured Paul Bettany in the leading role. Although this fine actor is not a traditional action hero, he certainly has an impressive acting resume that does not typecast him. As the voice of Jarvis in the Iron Man films, Silas in The Da Vinci Code and also Charles Darwin in Creation, this actor with theatrical roots is not the problem. In the Internet Movie Database, he’s credited as the man who loves to play secondary characters that are scene-stealers.

The one moment that stole the show in Priest is in the animated narrative. It is wonderfully gory and subliminally surreal. Unfortunately, this sequence was not made any longer. An animation can continue in where the live-action film has left off. »

Paul Bettany Is A Master Of Sex

12 November 2011 7:13 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

We haven't read the script or anything, but from the name alone, this seems like a pretty good career move for Paul Bettany.

As confirmed by Variety, the British actor has signed on for the Showtime pilot, "Masters of Sex." Bettany will play William H. Masters, a gynecologist who, along with Virginia E. Johnson, formed the Masters & Johnson team that made groundbreaking advances in the study of human sexuality and sexual disorders.

Bettany has largely been a big screen actor through his career, starring in such films as "A Beautiful Mind," "The Da Vinci Code," "Priest" (though he may wish to forget that one) and this fall's "Margin Call," the financial thriller in which he was the standout star amongst a world class cast.

In fact, Bettany joins a long line of big screen actors who have or will be making a substantial foray into television; check out a list »

Paul Bettany to Star in Showtime Pilot 'Masters of Sex'

Paul Bettany to Star in Showtime Pilot 'Masters of Sex'

Actor Paul Bettany has joined the cast for the upcoming pilot Masters of Sex, being produced for Showtime, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

While the show has a title that wouldn't be out of place with other late-night premium cable offerings, the pilot is dramatic fare, starring Bettany as sex education researcher William Masters. Ah, see, that's where it gets its title!

The pilot, which was greenlit by Showtime in August, will likely be a period piece set around the 1950s or '60s, dealing with the real-life Masters' research. I'm thinking of it as the television version of Kinsey.

The series is penned by The Pacific writer Michelle Ashford, and will be executive produced by Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly, who have worked together before on shows such as FX's Justified and CBS's A Gifted Man.
