Next week Scott Stewart’s Dark Skies starring Keri Russell lands on DVD and Blu-ray, and since we missed chatting with him when the film was in theaters earlier this year, we caught up with him now that his latest is making its home release debut.
During our exclusive interview with Stewart, we discussed his approach to the alien-infused story of a singular family terrorized, why you can’t fight a force of nature, his upcoming projects (which include both film and television work) and much more.
Dread Central: Thanks so much for chatting today, Scott; I was curious if you’d start off by discussing why you decided to do a very different kind of alien movie with Dark Skies than we usually see and made it into more of an intimate family drama than a huge sci-fi spectacle, which is what most people would expect?

Who doesn't love movies that take place in loony bins? Psychos are just fun to be around, man. Psychos on the loose are even better! Anything can and will happen. Good thing for us fellow nuts that P5ych is on its way!
Cinema Management Group launched sales at Cannes on the upcoming horror thriller P5ych from Saw franchise producer Peter Block.
Block and fellow producer Maxwell Sinovi have offers out to Paul Bettany (Priest) and Paul Giamatti (John Dies at the End) to star.
“P5ych centres on the postmodern conceit of five patients undergoing experimental treatment whose real-life experiences inspired horror staples such as Friday The 13th, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. When the former victims are made to confront their fears, the memories become real and the body count begins to rise.”
Matthew Currie Holmes, who appeared in The Fog and Firewall, will direct. »

If you watched the premiere of Defiance on Monday night, and if you posted about that on a social networking site, you were not alone. Not only did one of Syfy‘s biggest and most ambitious undertakings to date bring in record viewership numbers, it won the night in “social exposures,” which sounds like an unfortunate middle school incident but is actually a good thing for the show and for the network.
To celebrate, we have a featurette with showrunner Kevin Murphy and star Grant Bowler talking about the pilot (not Too spoilery, but best watched after you’ve seen the premiere) entitled “Shooting the Shtako” (yes it means what you think it means), and the press release with all of the numbers, for you digit heads out there.
Featurette: Defiance – Shooting the Shtako: Pilot

Zero hour is upon us as "Defiance" prepares for its debut tonight on Syfy, and we have a look at the network's most recent promo trailer for the series, which provides a quick overview of what's in store for those of you who take a chance on this first-of-its-kind interactive video game/TV show crossover.
Synopsis:
"Defiance" introduces a world where humans and aliens live together on a planet ravaged by decades of war and transformed by alien terra-forming machines. It centers on Jeb Nolan (Grant Bowler), the law-keeper in a bustling frontier boomtown that is one of the new world’s few oases of civility and inclusion. Nolan is a former Marine who fought in the alien conflict and suffered the loss of his wife and child in the war. The trauma transformed him into a lone wanderer in the wilds of this new and dangerous world.

The biggest thing I take away from Dark Skies is that it comes from Scott Stewart, the same man who brought us Legion and Priest. Both those movies were dumb but fun pieces of effects heavy action, but with Dark Skies he is on a different tack, creating a genuinely creepy tale of an other worldly incursion on a typical American family. The family in question are the Barrets, wife Lacey (Kerri Russell), husband Daniel (Josh Hamilton), and their two sons, 13 year old Jesse (Dakota Goyo) and the younger Sam (Kadan Rockett), whose lives are turned upside when strange events plague their home. Starting small (like food being thrown over the floor and security alarms being triggered), they soon escalate (the mass bird attack which is central to the movies ad campaign), until the Barrets' lives are put in real danger. There is a real sense of unease about this »

Modern horror is a little light on big names but one who should certainly be bigger is Jason Blum. He’s not exactly a household name but a man who almost single-handed seems to be responsible for virtually all the theatrically released horror content of the last few years, a man who can count the Paranormal Activity films, the Insidious (soon to be) franchise, last year’s well received Sinister and even Barry Levinson’s eco-horror The Bay among his successes. While not all of his films hit (the forthcoming Lords of Salem appears to have attained anti-buzz for instance), he still seems to be a man who takes horror seriously and seems to see it as much as a legitimate genre as »
