Toronto: Momentum Takes U.S. Rights to Australian Box Office Hit ‘Oddball’ (Exclusive)

London — Momentum Pictures has taken U.S. rights to family entertainment movie “Oddball,” which is being sold at the Toronto Film Festival by Global Screen. The film grossed 9.3 million Aud ($7 million) in Australia for distributor Village Roadshow.

The film has also been acquired by Snap for free-tv, pay-tv and VOD rights in Latin America, Trade Media for France, Just4Kids for Benelux, Lusomundo for Portugal, Champ Lis for China, and Suraya for Malaysia.

Previously announced deals include sales to Icon for U.K. and Ireland, Mongrel Media for Canada, Microcinema for Italy, Kino Swiat for Poland, Gulf Film for Middle East, Fivia for Ex-Yugoslavia, Albania and Slovenia, Medyavizyon for Cyprus and Turkey, Star Films for Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia (theatrical rights), and Globo for Brazil (TV and VOD rights).

Julia Morris, Peter Garrett, Delta Goodrem, Rachel Griffiths, Jane Turner and Shane Jacobson have joined season eight of genealogy series Who Do You Think You Are?

The eight part season, premiering September 13 on Sbs, sees eight Australians following the trail of their own ancestors.

This season includes stories about slavery, kidnapping, cannibalism and the Ira, according to a statement released by Sbs.

"The series reflects the countless different paths that led the way to modern Australia, with tales from the grandeur of the Prussian court to the swelter of Pacific Islands, via the midnight sun in Scandinavia and the vaults of the Bank of England. The illustrious protagonists learn of the sacrifices their forebears made, overcoming hurdles and heartbreak to allow their offspring to shine and help make up the proud patchwork of diversity that is Australia in the 21st century."

Brendan Williams puts the Uber in Goober

Filming has started on Goober (May 13), the first of five new South Australian projects being produced through the joint $500,000 Safc/ABC TV Labs iview originals initiative.

Goober tells the story of Harry, an Uber driver, who lies somewhere on the autism spectrum and can.t hold down any other job, but wants to make friends and a bit of money.

Harry is eternally optimistic - especially about his love for Wendy, the girl from his favourite drive-through restaurant..

Harry spends his life trying to turn passengers into friends, and Wendy into his girlfriend.

The series of 6 x 5 minute episodes features a South Australian cast and crew along with acclaimed Australian actor Shane Jacobson (Kenny, The Dressmaker) providing the voice of Harry.s Dad.

Goober will be the first major acting role for South Australian Brendan Williams, who plays Harry. He stars alongside another South Australian, Ashton Malcolm.

Filming has wrapped on the largest ever Chinese-Australian co-production at Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast.

The 3-D Movie, Nest, stars Chinese megastar Li Bingbing, Kellan Lutz (The Twilight Saga, Expendables 3), Kelsey Grammer (Transformers), Stef Dawson (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay), Chinese popstar and actor Wu Chun and Shane Jacobson (The Dressmaker, Oddball, Kenny).

Li Bingbing.s most recent film, Zhongkui: Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal, on which Arclight Films holds the worldwide sales rights, earned $80 million in China last year.

She is best known internatiionally for her work in Transformers: Age of Extinction, Resident Evil: Retribution and Detective Dee: Mystery of the Phantom Flame.
