A variation on the now familiar Nigerian scam.
15 April 2014 | by (Bradenton, Florida) – See all my reviews

"The Case of the Spanish Prisoner" is interesting because it's a 1950s variation on the recently popular Nigerian scam. You know, where a person receives an email from someone (often in Nigeria) who claims to be the heir to a huge fortune BUT they cannot get it on their own and promise to split it with you if you give them a paltry some--usually a few thousand dollars! In this case, however, it's long before the internet and uses real live people to play their parts.

The show begins with a con woman posing as Miss Martinez from Nicaragua. Her family fortune is hidden in a suitcase and all she needs to do is get change so she can redeem it--and retrieve the $2,000,000 hidden inside. Because the Burton's are so greedy, they agree to help--and Mr. Burton nearly is killed in the process! Thanks to the ever-nice Captain Braddock and the Mexican police, the scammers are exposed and goodness prevails.

The only problem with this episode is that the scam is a bit confusing. Otherwise, it's interesting to note how little things have changed over the years.
