It is mid-January, near the town of Henderson, Yukon, Canada. Brian wakes up anticipating the cash he might take home from the local curling bonspiel taking place later that day. But the day goes from good to not good to bad to pathetic. Georgee is in town to see his Grampa Isaac, yet even with Georgee's curling prowess, the bonspiel is a bust. On his way home that night, Brian witnesses a meteorite flash across the sky, explode in the atmosphere, and disappear over the mountains.

Brian is inspired by this paranormal event. Next morning he resolves to find the object that flashed across the sky. Heinz his employer, personal critic, and dubious source of expert information is skeptical. With the help of Ivison, Brian begins compiling an aural ethnography of sightings and anecdotal descriptions of the event from the people he talks with. Everyone, it seems, saw the meteorite. However, Ivison's veracity comes in to question.

Mona, the attractive wildlife officer who acts like a cop, also saw the meteorite. Brian gets her story of intrigue about investigating a German game show being shot in the exotic north, and how Mona meets Barbara, the beautiful game show host. The story doesn't get Brian any closer in his search, but it does tweak his interest in Mona. And he discovers he has competition in his quest. Two American military scientists are also on the trail of the fallen object. And Bernie and Stevie, two small town hoods, are working for them.

Diatribes from Heinz include discouraging analysis about just how hard it is going to be to find a few space rocks in thousands of hectares of frozen wilderness. He tells Brian he is going to have to be very lucky. When Brian helps out two Japanese tourists, underdressed for the cold, he gets their story. It is another dead end, but it leads Brian to Domenic, a 10 year old who provides critical information. That's when Georgee is drawn back in to the story by virtue of some intriguing family history.

The two Americans, Hendy and Meadows, are becoming formidable competition in the search for the meteorite. Much to his partner's frustration, Hendy develops a thing for Fran, matron of the local karaoke bar. Things are ticking along nicely when Meadows receives information from Bernie and Stevie that Brian has discovered something and is going out to search. They arrange to follow. Mona catches wind of this and follows as well.

The trail has led Brian to Talis Bay where Georgee's family has a summer fish camp. Brian gets Georgee's story on the drive out there. He learns that Grampa Isaac passed away the night of the meteorite. And that he had requested to be buried at the bottom of Talis Lake. Georgee needs Brian's help. Mona shows up at the fish camp and tells Brian he is being followed. They deliver Isaac's body to its resting place while she stalls the pursuing Americans and their entourage. And then they discover something remarkable on the surface of the frozen lake.
