Trivia

Meatball Machine became the international breakthrough movie of Yoshihiro Nishimura's career, as a result of the extensive coverage his special make-up effects work on it received from then-independent movie news website Twitch, beginning over a month before its premiere at the now-defunct Tokyo International Fantastic Film Festival. Despite being made just a couple years before The Machine Girl, Tokyo Gore Police, etc, and having the same special effects guy, Meatball Machine's a whole 'nother ballpark than that sorta hyperactive/campy/fun entrail splatter--it's a gory horror film, but its angle is more sparse and psychological, even a bit depressing. The symbolism of this alien symbiote thing drilling blinders into its victims' eyes is obvious: it's all about alienation and difficulty relating to others, presumably things you're familiar with if you're watching Meatball Machine, ho ho. Maybe it's all just an excuse for giant cyborg mutant fight scenes. When the action picks up, it feels a little like Ultraman via Akira or Tetsuo: The Iron Man or something, a body horror Godzilla film, Power Rangers directed by Cronenberg. You get the idea.

The gore? Superb. The rest of the effects are a mixed bag. You can't really be too picky with movies like this, but for the most part artistic design triumphs over the low (no?) budget and it looks pretty great, with costumes giving the convincing impression of twisted flesh wrapping itself around the nonsensical protrusions of malignant cybernetics. On the other hand, the less shown, the better, in many cases. There must be dozens of very long shots of this rather pathetic looking little hairy, wet alien puppet that nobody really needs to see for more than five seconds, I reckon. They must have been really proud of it for some reason.

The plot is occasionally somewhat coherent. Cough. Yeah, this didn't need to be more than 20, maybe 30 minutes, but it's interesting in terms of gutter curio, a neat little gore-soaked morality play.
