Many documentaries use editing, effects and music to create a mood or emphasize a point, which I think is a great way to make your voice heard through movie magic. Propaganda can be lovely when well executed. However, this behind-the-scenes documentary is almost completely absent of those techniques, a very uncommon trait in the business of hanging around with superstars. It feels almost like an edited home video, and that I am thankful for.
Director Judy Hoffman and documentary cameraman Albert Maysles give us a glimpse into the everyday life of 20-year-old pop phenomenon Britney Spears and her crew during a three-day concert tour in Mexico. This refreshingly impartial little documentary leads us through a microcosmos of body guards, hotel corridors, stages and the ever-present faceless hordes of hysterical fans, nicely accompanied by the pop star's not-so-commercial southern accent and undeniable natural beauty.
Partly interesting, partly boring, nevertheless fascinating.
