As a Denver local and devotee of the Drafthouse, it’s a great pleasure to inform all of you that the Mile High Horror Film Festival and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema will be presenting an advance screening of James Wan’s newest thriller, The Conjuring, on Monday, July 8th, at 7 p.m.
Naturally, you’ll likely be competing with hundreds of others, however, as there are only 100 seats available for the screening. Tickets can be reserved at the event page on GoFobo, and each reservation allows the option of getting a second ticket for a friend.
The Mile High Horror Film Festival is a great fest (I’ve gone every year since its inception) and is held every October in beautiful Denver, Co. This year it will celebrate its new home at the Alamo Drafthouse Littleton, located at 7301 S. Santa Fe Drive, Littleton, Co, 80120.

Yes, folks, "White House Down" flopped at the box-office. Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx were no match for the star power of Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy whose "The Heat" triumphed at No. 2 with a $40 million debut. "White House Down?" $25.7 million and with a reported budget of $150 million, it's a certifiable flop! Worst than "After Earth," "Jack the Giant Slayer," and "The Hangover Part III."
So what happened? Well, first, there was a movie called "Olympus Has Fallen" that shared the same DNA as "White House Down." And actually, I found that movie better than the Tatum-Foxx collaboration. Why? Because it had a singular vision -- the terrorists are bad, but don't worry, Gerard Butler is here to save the day. Its simplicity is what saved the film.
"White House Down" has a lot of angles that people were not able to connect the dots. Is it about White House being attacked? »

James Badge Dale. You may not know him by name, but you’re probably familiar with his face. Appearing in shows like 24, Rubicon and The Pacific, and films like Flight, The Grey and Shame, has given the actor an impressive career thus far. Now, with the Summer of 2013 upon us, James Badge Dale is about to gain a whole lot more exposure as he has already appeared in two major blockbusters (Iron Man 3 and World War Z) and has one more on the horizon: The Lone Ranger.
In his upcoming film, James Badge Dale plays Dan Reid, the brother of the titular ranger. Though it’s more of a supporting part, Dale brings his always reliable acting chops to the table and turns in a strong performance, one that helps him to stand out in a star studded cast that includes Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer.

World War Z was a really good zombie flick. If you haven't seen it yet, you should check it out when you get a chance. I have to admit that a lot of concept and production art done for movies is actually a lot better than what you end up seeing on the big screen, and this zombie production art for World War Z is intense! I love the bullets tearing through him, and shattering his brittle body. It was created by Cghub artist framestoreart, and even if it wasn't a part of the movie, it's still awesome! This is just an amazing piece of zombie art.

★☆☆☆☆ Luca Boni and Marco Ristori's abysmal Apocalypse Z (2013) makes recent Brad Pitt blockbuster World War Z (2013), which tried manfully (if impotently) to transpose the walking dead to the mainstream, look like an Oscar-worthy literary adaptation. This slice of Dtv schlock is truly woeful in every way imaginable - and then some. There's really not much of a storyline here, so let's not dwell on it for long. Suffice to say that a group of Neanderthal mercenaries are sent to a remote part of Eastern Europe by the American government, after an accident at a research plant turns the local populace into flesh-eating zombies.
Under the impression that they're there to wipe out the evidence by planting a nuclear bomb, the gang of ex-criminals soon discover that they've been-double crossed by the powers-that-be - and that the zombies are actually the least of their worries. So, let's dissect the evidence »

I've updated the RopeofSilicon Box Office Challenge leaderboard after processing the results from this weekend's box office where Monsters University dipped about 45% for its second weekend at #1 with $45.6 million. The Heat and White House Down both came in $900,000 under their Sunday estimates with The Heat bringing in $39.1 million and White House Down ending the weekend with a disappointing $24.8 million. The other film readers were predicting was the second weekend of World War Z, which ended up dropping 55% for a $29.7 million weekend. In other news, Man of Steel crossed the $500 million mark worldwide this weekend -- $248.7 million domestically, and $271.7 internationally -- making it the biggest June release ever. With a reported budget of $225 million this is good news for Warner Bros. as the film is only 17 days into its overall release. As for that leaderboard, here is the current top ten, but you can see the full list of rankings right »

On tap right now are several new clips from The Conjuring which you can watch if you must, but if we were you, we'd skip 'em, the reason being that the less you know about this flick, the better and more effective it is.
Read our review of The Conjuring here!
Synopsis
Before there was Amityville, there was Harrisville. Based on a true story described in the book House of Darkness, House of Light: The True Story by Andrea Perron, The Conjuring tells the horrifying tale of how world renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren were called upon to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives.

"White House Down" was supposed to be one of the surefire hits of the summer.
Channing Tatum became a bona fide movie star last year with a sleeper hit trifecta of "The Vow," "21 Jump Street" and "Magic Mike" (not to mention being named People's Sexiest Man Alive). Jamie Foxx was coming off his biggest box office success to date with the Oscar nominated "Django Unchained." And director Roland Emmerich has experience both directing blockbuster hits ("2012," "The Day After Tomorrow") and destroying the White House in a patriotic summer movie sensation ("Independence Day").
But even with that pedigree and high profile pre-release hype dating all the way back to Jimmy Kimmel's post-Oscars ABC special (where Foxx and Tatum turned catchy/silly slow jam "Channing All Over Your Tatum" into a viral hit), "White House Down" shocked Hollywood with a embarrassingly limp $25.7 million estimated opening weekend.

Hollywood is reaping a decent harvest from a tight focus on broadly appealing fare – in spite of the gloomy predictions of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas about an 'implosion'
Boisterous summer box office continued to demonstrate the iron-clad credentials of broadly appealing studio fare as Monsters University held its top berth and the top five movies each grossed over $20m. Despite the recent gloomy prognostications of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, by the half-way point, blockbuster season 2013 has shown little sign of cracking up.
What is interesting about the remarks about an "implosion" by the moviemaking duo at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts in June is how, well, uninteresting they actually were. There was nothing in their dark predictions that any savvy industry watcher hadn't already accepted as inevitable.
There will come a time when several summer tentpoles will come crashing to earth within the space of several months. »

It’s hard to believe we’re halfway through the summer, but no worries because July has fireworks, hot dogs, and movies! June was a soft month with staid comedies like “The Internship” and divisive blockbusters such as “Man of Steel” and “World War Z.” But, the next thirty days or so should have more than enough for you whether your appetite is for explosions or more subtler fare with a bit more substance. July’s highlights include the latest from Woody Allen, sensations from Cannes and Sundance, compelling documentaries and of course, a few well-placed blockbusters that could do boffo business upon release. Feel free to tell us what we missed, or what else we should be looking forward to this month! Anything in particular that you're looking forward to? “The Lone Ranger” Synopsis: John Reid (Armie Hammer) is a man who believes in the power of the law. »

I don’t know if you know this, horror fans, but in Chinese films, the vampires tend to hop around. Rigor mortis and all that. Sort like how zombies Should shuffle instead of run around like speed freaks. But that’s out of fashion these days, so you get the zombies of “World War Z” and the like. Anyways, check out the first teaser trailer for actor turned director Juno Mak’s very cool looking feature film debut, the horror outing “Rigor Mortis”, which looks to combine the hopping and speed freak zombie for its vampire. The film teams Mak with Japanese director Takashi Shimizu (creator of those popular “Grudge” movies — you know, the one with the blue kid and the crawling mom), and it looks like a scary fun time. Okay, probably not all that scary. But “Rigor Mortis” definitely looks like one very slick horror film, with some »

Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx watched their dreams of a summer box office hit burn slowly to the ground, much like the Capitol Building the trailer for the movie they hoped would get them there, "White House Down." The $150 million buddy action movie came from blockbuster maker, director Roland Emmerich, and a script that Sony Pictures paid $3 million to acquire, and yet it couldn't stand up to returning films, "Monsters University" and "World War Z," and the new competition "The Heat," making only $25 million.
So how does a movie with all of that going for it and two leads coming off the biggest year of their careers fail at the same time a film like "World War Z," the Brad Pitt zombie fest that had nothing but bad buzz, crosses the $250 million mark at the global box office?
The downfall of "White House Down," which shared a laughably similar plot »

This past weekend at the box office saw a pair of new releases, but Pixar's Monsters University managed to hold them both at bay and retain the #1 spot. Man of Steel has fallen back a little further, but is quickly approaching the $250 million domestic mark. Come inside for the full breakdown.
Pixar shows that it's still the king (at least for one more weekend) by keeping the number 1 spot this past weekend at the box office. The Heat wasn't able to top it, but that doesn't mean it didn't give some strong opposition. Meanwhile just about everything else has dropped down a notch except for White House Down which was only able to pull in a 4th spot this weekend (not a great opening for a man who normally tops the charts).
Title Weekend Total 1. Monsters University $46,180,000 $171 2. The Heat $40,000,000 $40 3. World War Z $29,800,000 $123.7 4. White House Down $25,700,000 $25.7 5. Man of Steel $20,820,000 $248.6 6. This Is The End »

"White House Down" is a flop, no matter how many fans of the film chastise the American public for not showing up. Roland Emmerich's latest feature was budgeted at a reported $150 million, but earned just $25.7 million at the box office this past weekend. That's a lower opening weekend tally than 2013 disasters like "After Earth," "Jack the Giant Slayer" and "The Hangover Part III"; that's lower than the R-rated, similarly themed "Olympus Has Fallen"; that's just $200,000 more than "Battleship."
"We couldn't be more proud or supportive of the film Roland, Channing and Jamie created. This weekend's launch is just the beginning," a Sony spokesperson said to THR. "While 'White House Down' opened in a few smaller countries this weekend, it will not begin to open in major overseas territories until mid-July and it will continue to roll out overseas well into the fall."
That optimism aside, "White House Down »

If you didn't catch James Badge Dale in HBO's The Pacific, you missed one of the finest performances in a mini-series in recent years. James was outstanding in the 2010 series as Pfc Robert Leckie, and he followed that role up with stand-out performances in Shame with Michael Fassbender and Flight with Denzel Washington. And this year Dale can be seen in three big theatrical releases: Iron Man 3, World War Z and Disney's The Lone Ranger.
In The Lone Ranger, Dale plays the pivotal role of Texas Ranger Dan Reid, brother of John Reid - aka 'The Lone Ranger' (played by Armie Hammer) - and husband of Rebecca (Ruth Wilson). In support of the July 3, 2013 theatrical release of The Lone Ranger, I had the chance to speak to Dale about why he wanted to play Dan Reid, the stunts, and taking part in a cowboy boot camp.
