Academy Names 241 Screenplays and 77 Scores Eligible for the Oscar

30 December 2010 12:00 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

We know you were losing sleep over it, so we're happy to be the first to tell you that Furry Vengeance and Yogi Bear are both eligible to be nominated for Best Screenplay Oscars on January 25. Also that Marmaduke score that has been wearing out your iPod? It's eligible too. However, the inclusion of these 2010 masterpieces really isn't that big a surprise. With final nominations just over a month away the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that 241 screenplays - 134 original and 107 adapted - are eligible for a Best Screenplay nomination and that music from 77 films is eligible for Best Original Score (not including Black Swan, The Fighter or The Kids Are All Right [1]). Add those to the 248 films eligible [2] for Best Picture and Oscar voters have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks. Kind of. The Notable Films of 2011: Part Two

19 December 2010 2:05 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Beaver

Opens: March 23rd 2011

Cast: Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Anton Yelchin, Jennifer Lawrence

Director: Jodie Foster

Summary: A depressed toy company CEO with a failed marriage starts to wear a beaver puppet on his hand as a form of therapy, much to the initial bemusement of his family. He soon begins talking only through the character.

Analysis: This time last year, excitement was quietly brewing for "The Beaver". Gibson's drunken tirade a few years before hand wasn't forgotten, but enough time had passed that this looked to be the year of a potential comeback for the actor.

The thriller remake "Edge of Darkness" and this were his first on screen roles in ten years, 'Beaver' is also his "Maverick" co-star Foster's return to the director's chair fifteen years after her last feature. The script topped the 2008 Black List and scored rave reviews for its blend of sophisticated humor and sad pathos, »

Are you ready for the rousing story of a band who competes with U2 and loses? No? Well, it's coming anyway and if anything, it makes us wonder how we can spin our tales of failed musical glory into an indie movie. Based on British music journalist Neil McCormick's memoir "I Was Bono's Doppleganger," "Killing Bono" follows Neil and Ivan McCormick (Ben Barnes from "Prince Caspian" and Robert Sheehan), two brothers who form a band together but are consistently overshadowed by their classmates, who go on to form U2. Edgar Allan Poe Sports Nike Shox in 'The Raven'

15 November 2010 9:50 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Gawker (via SlashFilm) posted the following image of John Cusack as Edgar Allan Poe on the set of V for Vendetta helmer James McTeigue's The Raven.

The film is a fictionalized account of the final five "mysterious" days of Poe's life. The story will follow the famous writer as he joins the hunt for a serial killer whose murders are inspired by his stories. "It's like the poem, 'The Raven,' itself, crossed with Se7en," McTeigue said previously.

Co-starring alongside Cusack are Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans) and Alice Eve (She's Out of My League).

The guys over at Bloody Disgusting have just been sent a new teaser image for 'Atm'. The new thriller from writer Chris Sparling ('Buried') and director David Brooks is set primarily in an Atm vestibule. So it seems Sparling likes to work with confined spaces when telling his tales. This has been a big year for Jay Baruchel, what with him headlining three movies and all: "She's Out of My League," "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and the hugely successful "How to Train Your Dragon." He's not finished yet, though, as we've been hearing major buzz about Baruchel's hockey-themed passion project, "Goon," a film he co-wrote with "Superbad" scribe Evan Goldberg that is currently in production and rumored to be a potential darling at the American Film Market this week.

Seann William Scott stars as Doug, a small town bouncer who, after physically defending his best friend (Baruchel) at a hockey game, is recruited to play the enforcer for a minor league team, despite initial misgivings. Liev Schreiber and Alison Pill also star, with Michael Dowse directing.

MTV News chatted with Baruchel about the film and who'll be starring, and scored some exclusive photos from the flick, which you can check »

Seven Movies with Homophobic Jokes (and Three Without!)

3 November 2010 7:00 AM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

Gay jokes are still so common in American movie comedies that most of them barely register. That’s why, whenever anyone points out how common they are and says, "Hey, maybe this is contributing to a culture of prejudice," there tends to be a immediate and furious counter-response of: “Political correctness!” “It’s just a joke!” “I don’t see what the big deal is!”

People don’t see what the big deal is, because they’re not seeing the big picture, which is that this isn’t about any one joke. It’s about the fact that these jokes are so common – in a way that jokes about other minorities such as African Americans or Jewish people or Asians or women or the disabled, simply no longer are.

And yet no longer making jokes about "stingy Jews" (except ironically) or casually using the n-word as an insult didn't stop comedians from telling jokes, »
