Storyline

Over a decade ago, a group of scientists carried out experiments at the Tomb of Gilgamesh, the supposed resting place of the demigod subject of an ages-old myth. After the work at the "Heaven's Gate" facility was abruptly halted, a terrorist calling himself Enkidu set into motion an incident called "Twin X" which transformed Earth's sky into an enormous mirror. In the present day, two siblings named Tatsuya and Kiyoko Madoka are pursued by the yakuza for unpaid debts and are saved by the Gilgamesh, a team of young men and women who transform into hideous beasts. But when a second group of children, headed by the shadowy Countess of Werdenberg, "rescue" the siblings from the Gilgamesh using psychic powers of their own, Tatsuya and Kiyoko are forced to choose which side to believe in. Dark and beautiful
17 June 2006 | by See all my reviews

I read the review for this in Play magazine, and it lived up to ALL expectations. The animation is spectacular and unique among anime, feeling more like a film-noir than a typical Berserk or Hellsing type of show. The voice acting and dialogue are spot-on, and the story features excellent battles without being excessively gory, touching love without being sappy, and a series of twists and turns so beautiful they will leave you pondering and discussing the show well after it's ended. The only words I have to say against it are that you must watch it from the beginning, and not miss a single episode, or you will be hopelessly lost. And, if you are too put-off by dark themes (very dark). Gilgamesh is a true masterpiece, a Neon Genesis Evangelion for the new millennium.
