Did You Know?

This episode contains an infamous scene in which Nyssa drops her skirt. According to the script she was feeling ill and trying to loosen the pressure on her stomach, but this is not clear on screen. In an interview for the book Doctor Who: 25 Glorious Years, Sarah Sutton suggests it was deliberate Fan Service:

'I still smile when I remember how the Production Office kept getting letters of complaint about Nyssa being too covered up. So that's why when I left the series in "Terminus" I decided to drop my skirt as a parting gesture to all those fans who had written in.

'Mind you, it caused such a stir at the time, and as I'm still being asked about it when I am interviewed, I'm not sure it was a wise thing to have done!' See more »

Nyssa: Where are you taking me?
Valgard: I don't usually speak.
Nyssa: I'm not one of the lazers.
Valgard: Your appearance says otherwise.
Nyssa: Are you doctors?
Valgard: [snorts] Baggage handlers. We just receive and pass on.

This one is hard work so far.

Doctor Who: Terminus: Part Two starts as the mysterious spaceship full of diseased leper's docks with a huge space station known as Terminus that is also located in the exact center of the known Universe. The diseased leper's shuffle onto Terminus where they are rounded up by the guards, known as the Vanir, who run the station & put into cells. Nyssa (Sarah Sutton) has become infected & has also been rounded up by the Vanir while Tegan (Janet Fielding) & Turlough (Mark Strickson) remained trapped & lost inside the spaceship. The Doctor (Peter Davison) now separated from his three companions finds himself at the mercy of Valgard (Andrew Burt) a Vanir who insists he is going to kill the Doctor...

Episode 14 from season 20 this Doctor Who adventure originally aired here in the UK during February 1983 & after a pretty poor Part One this the second episode of Terminus the second story in the Guardian Trilogy is really hard going, I really saw little here to get excited about. If Part One was just a collection of badly strung together sequences of various character's wandering around corridors Part Two really isn't any sort of an improvement, Tegan & Turlough remain trapped & lost inside what looks like a air vent for the entire episode while the Doctor & space pirate Kari do nothing but wander around & it's left to Nyssa in her final story to provide some dramatic incident as she has become infected with a disease & decides to take most of her clothes off, yes that's right she strips down to her underwear for no apparent reason at all. I mean she doesn't even say she's hot or anything, she just randomly takes her skirt off half way through the episode! None of the ideas here have really grabbed my imagination, a ship full of diseased people isn't anything new or particularly inspiring & I would have thought that a race so technologically advanced would have created some cure or at least some sort of drug to ease their discomfort. Overall a disappointingly slow & dull twenty five minutes.

This episode sees the introduction of the Vanir guards & their armoured outfits, obviously badly made & fitted out of plastic they have little movement & whenever one of the actors tries to do anything they don't half make a racket. You can hear plastic scraping against plastic & dull thuds all over the place as they were obviously very difficult to move around in. This episode also sees the introduction of a dog headed alien monster with bright red light bulbs for eyes called the Garm which looks very stiff & rather unconvincing. Some of the model shots of the spaceship docking with the Terminus space station at the start of this episode were reasonable but on the whole Terminus has that really bad 80's pantomime feel to it that certain Doctor Who stories suffered from with bad props, bad sets & wooden acting.

Terminus: Part Two is a really forgettable & pretty poor twenty five minutes, I usually like Doctor Who even when it's bad but when it's as dull & lifeless as Terminus has been so far it's very hard if not impossible for me to enjoy it on any sort of level.
