There were some good ideas for the sketches but it seems like the
writers couldn't figure out how to develop them. The result is
something you might see at a high school production with a single
sight-gag or punchline stretched to fit the allotted time. It's not
that the gag is bad or stupid (though sometime it is) - it's just that
you can't fill 10 minutes of dead time with one joke.
There are a couple of funnier commandments that got more than half a
laugh. Winona Ryder is a scream - she of course is in the sketch about
the do not steal commandment. (See how clever that is - this movie is
full of them...) Unfortunately, the funnier sketches are at the end of
the movie and you have to sit through an hour to get there.
This reminds me a lot of SNL - the current incarnation - not the
"classic" incarnations. If you watch SNL you'll probably like this. If
you find SNL an interminable bore, like I do - then avoid...

It has been so long since I've had the urge to walk out on a film...
but I stayed through this one just to see the credits. I wanted to
really make sure that people I had had great respect for in previous
incarnations had made this piece of trash. Unfortunately they had.
Half the theater walked out while I was watching, however. More power
to them.
I am an atheist, yet I found this religiously offensive. I am a
liberal, yet I found this politically offensive. I am an independent
film lover, but I found this cinematicly offensive. There were a few
laughs, to be sure, but most of what the creators thought was funny I
wish they had kept to themselves.

This literally reminds me of skits put together at summer camp. The
stories are so ridiculous, it's as if they were written by people who
never actually expected them to make it to a big screen.
But alas here they are, in a pretty decent-looking production, no less.
Nothing B-movie or low-budget about it. Well, about its looks, anyway.
Where this movie really "shines", though, is in the acting. Not only
did this movie somehow attract a fair amount of A-list talent, but
these actors really gave of it, considering the material they were
handed. Extra points go to Winona Ryder, who was an especially good
sport, shoving her tongue into the mouth of a wooden puppet and all.
Basically my 7 score is based on the fact that I had at least a smile
on throughout most of this movie. Seeing all these big names, all
perfectly willing to "lower" themselves to the level of this material,
just really renewed my faith in humanity.

The movie has some lines that rival chapellesque potential for
repetition. One of the ten vignettes (with cordry/marino) will have you
laughing for fifteen minutes straight. the movie definitely features a
couple weak ones, but overall if you liked "the state" or "wet hot
American summer" or have even the slightest sense of humor, you will
really like this movie. Finally a comedy with out the farrelly same old
bs.
It starts off slow, there's no denying that. and paul rudd is not as
funny as he could be, but the juxtaposition with the reality of the
narration with the absolute ridiculousness of the stories works well.
its like all the big names that you expected to deliver the huge
performances don't come through as strongly, though winona delivers
well (as usual).
Definitely see it in the movies, its an experience.

Okay, David Wain's "The Ten" isn't attempting to redefine the genre of
sketch comedy or satire, nor does it pass judgement on the religious
iconography it uses as a template. It merely cheekily plays with the
idea of the commandments in a smutty and more often than not, unique
way. What I think the strongest part of this film is, is its
pre-occupation with the perverse and how one can play that out on
screen. The repetition of the Spanish word for vagina, Winona Ryder's
hysterical relationship with that dummy, Oliver Platt's "Arnie"
impression, Liev Schreiber's cat scan machines and the untimely death
of hundreds of children, are all irreverent and interesting approaches
to the lessons or moral codes of the ten commandments. Whilst some are
better executed than others, I particularly appreciated the astute
connection between the "Adultery" segment and Woody Allen's films. The
use of the stamp jazz soundtrack as the camera moves down a busy New
York street, the inclusion of Dianne Weist as a needy wife, and the
self-indulgence of our two infidels all really hit the mark. Even their
dialogue seems to be mocking Allen's neurotic adulterous characters.
Which, as a Woody Allen fan, I really got into.
If for anything else, one should give "The Ten" a go for its wonderful
utilisation of well- known actors for comedy. They seem to really be
holding absolutely nothing back, and that is actually a thrilling
experience to watch. Particularly the work of Winona Ryder, whose drive
off into the sunset with no hands on her steering wheel, crying and
laughing like a lunatic whilst sitting next to her lover, a wooden
dummy, got me so giggly I couldn't breathe.

David Wain, Ken Marino, and Paul Rudd do incredible work together. All
three of their voices are very evident and if you're a fan of any of
them, you'll like this.
You'll notice that people have a tendency to call it the worst movie
they've ever seen, or rate it zero stars. The truth is the humor is so
incredibly absurd that it won't appeal to everyone. If you go into it
not wanting to like it, you probably won't.
I personally laughed the whole way. So has every audience I've seen it
with. Some of the sketches are stronger than others (my personal
favorite being any of the ones with Ken Marino's character, like Murder
and Covet they neighbors wife) but I assure you if you keep an open
mind, one of them will appeal to you.

When my friend and I originally rented this movie, we turned it off
about 30 minutes in when someone walked in and pointed out that my
friend was asleep and I was staring blankly at the table.
SINCE THEN however, we have both watched the movie dozens of times, and
laughed until we hurt EVERY time. We now both own it (since the rentals
were adding up to some hefty bills) and we watch it together whenever
we can. It gets better every time.
This may not be for everyone, apparently many people were not
impressed. But it's a special kind of humor that not everyone gets. I'm
sure, even after watching it so many times, there's still stuff I miss.
I love it, and for the people who can fully understand the comedy of
this movie, it's a definite TEN.

I did not have too much expectations with The Ten but I took a very
nice surprise with it.This comedy is not an excellent movie, but I found
it funny and very entertaining. The screenplay is the best element from
this movie. It is not only very irreverent, but it also generates humor
on a natural way.I think that the honesty of the humor is the thing
that makes it work pretty well.Besides, the cast is composed by solid
actors.Paul Rudd,Oliver Platt,Winona Ryder,Adam Brody and Liev
Schreiber bring conviction and credibility to their roles.I think that
their best attribute is that they never seem to be acting because they
completely take possession of their characters. The fail I found on this
movie is that two or three moments felt a little bit boring and they
could have easily been deleted, because they do not add too much to the
story. As I said on the beginning of this commentary,I had low
expectations with this movie, and although it is not excellent,I had a
very good time watching it.I recommend this comedy with confidence.

This is a bit like Kentucky Fried Movie, only about stories loosely
connected to the Ten Commandments, complete with intermissions by guest
star Paul Rudd. It's a bit SNL-ish, too.
The movie uses the same actors and characters in an interesting way,
intertwining their stories. There are a LOT of pop culture references
here, and I bet Juno would love this movie. Unfortunately some of the
best jokes are kinda 'buried' within the stories.
While this is not a bad movie, it's not as funny as it could have been.
Some jokes just don't hit the mark, and some are kinda unnecessarily
offensive.
However, most of the 'episodes', or sketches, have something memorable
and really funny in retrospect, in some weird way. It's a great film
for drinking games or for those who like hilarious one-liners.
The greatest thing about "The Ten" are the subtleties. These are the
things that made movies like Airplane! and Naked Gun so funny. In the
case of The Ten, there's not as much humour or laugh-out-loud moments,
but the subtle jokes and set-ups, which require some attention from the
viewer, make this movie worth watching for those who like comedies.
"The Ten" has very little to do with religion, and a lot to do with
sex. There is no 'christian agenda' at all as some claim. It's a silly
comedy with some great moments, and it works as a good, quick escape
from reality.
