USA tops 2009 cable ratings

30 December 2009 8:06 AM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

USA Network made a clean sweep of the 2009 ratings race, marking the fourth consecutive win for the NBC Universal powerhouse. Per Nielsen ratings data (a blend of live-plus-seven-day and two weeks of live-plus-same-day numbers), USA drew a record 3.27 million viewers in primetime, a 14% improvement over its year-ago delivery.

For the period spanning Dec. 29, 2008, through Dec. 27, 2009, USA swept ad-supported cable's three top TV demos, averaging 1.49 million adults 25-54, an increase of 11% versus 2008, while serving up 1.32 million viewers 18-49 (up 5%). The network also held off TBS to take the younger set, drawing 616,000 viewers 18-34.

USA effectively shattered the records it set in 2008, when it averaged 2.86 million total viewers, 1.34 million adults 25-54 and 1.32 million viewers 18-49.

(When factoring in all basic-cable nets, this year marks USA's second straight win among total viewers. In 2007, non-ad-supported Disney Channel topped the total cable universe with 2.7 million total viewers, edging USA's 2.68 million in the same period.)

USA Network Rules the Basic Cable Roost in 2009

29 December 2009 10:34 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

In the world of basic cable TV, the USA Network is king. The network, thanks to its returning hit “Burn Notice” and new hits “Royal Pains” and “Blue Collar”, topped the competition with the most-watched basic cable viewership for the year. The breezy, easy going net was tops among the heavily sought-after adults 18-49 demo (that’s up 29% from its 2008 numbers), with “Burn Notice” second in total viewers (a whopping 7.19 million) only to TNT’s veteran cop show “The Closer” (queen of the cable nets with 7.75 million), according to 2009 averages. Besides USA, the FX Channel also saw strong numbers for 2009, literally riding original shows like the dramatic powerhouse “Sons of Anarchy” and the comedies “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and newcomer “The League” to higher numbers. Overall, the channel was up 10% from its 2008 numbers. Espn, meanwhile, used the addition of Monday Night Football to give it the second highest »

TV News: Spartacus, Collar, Lost, Who

Spartacus: Blood and Sand

Starz announced plans today to order a second season of its new Sam Raimi-produced original series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand".

What's strange is that the renewal comes more than one month prior to the debut of the program starring Andy Whitfield, Lucy Lawless and John Hannah. The show's look utilises virtual environments, giving it a very "300"-style feel.

The 13-episode second season, expected to be titled "Spartacus: Vengeance", will start production in New Zealand on 13 new episodes in the first quarter of 2010.

White Collar

USA Network's freshman dramedy "White Collar" has been renewed for a second season, though no word on how many episodes or a premiere date. Though not a breakout hit like "Burn Notice", the show has scored a solid audience with 5.55 million viewers tuning in for the season finale, up from the 5.4m for the show's premiere.

USA orders second season of 'White Collar'

18 December 2009 12:00 PM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

USA Network's freshman dramedy "White Collar" has been collared for a second season.

The show's creator/executive producer Jeff Eastin tweeted the news Friday evening. "Congratulations to the best cast and crew on television," he wrote.

The pickup was confirmed by USA though no details on the size of the order or the second season's premiere date were provided.

"Jeff Eastin created a show that was both on-brand and that arguably took USA Network to a new level of sophistication," USA's president of original programing Jeff Wachtel said. "After breaking out of the gate so strongly, and with finale ratings that actually exceeded the premiere, 'White Collar' was a lock for a second season."

In the first portion of its freshman season, "White Collar" was a solid performer though not a breakout hit of the caliber of recent additions "Royal Pains" or "Burn Notice."

Getting 'Better'

16 December 2009 9:03 AM, PST | backstage.com | See recent Backstage news »

As the title character in "Better Off Ted," an off-the-beaten-path office comedy in its second season on ABC, Jay Harrington feels an added level of pressure. "Nobody is making me feel this way," he emphasizes. "But if we're not being watched as much I may hope, I will feel a certain responsibility." Still, after more than a decade in the business, he says the lead role on a network program is the most "fun and challenging" gig of his career as well as a major step for the 38-year-old Wellesley, Mass., native—perhaps best known for his recurring roles as the temperamental jerk Dr. Wyatt Lockhart on "Private Practice" and Teri Hatcher's youthful love interest on "Desperate Housewives." But starring on "Better Off Ted" presents a new set of challenges, not least his 12-hour-a-day, five-day-per-week schedule. "Look, I'm not working as a coal miner or in an auto plant, »

"Burn Notice" returns: It’s about Tyne

10 December 2009 1:00 PM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Just in time for the series to return from its hiatus, Burn Notice got some good news: USA has officially renewed the show for a fourth season.

Since Burn Notice’s ratings have skyrocketed this year, another season was pretty much a given. Still, I’m relieved. I love how Michael explains his secrets so I’ll know what to do when I finally become a super-secret secret spy.

And, of course, Burn Notice has two things that no other show on TV has:

Gabrielle Anwar

Sharon Gless

As we told you earlier this year, it’s also about to reunite Cagney and Lacey Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly again. The new promo gives us a preview — Ok, a glimpse — right around :17.

I know it’s not much, but if the facial expressions are any indication, we’re in for a good time.

'Burn Notice' and 'One Tree Hill' Stars Cast in Hallmark Movie

7 December 2009 3:09 PM, PST | buddytv.com | See recent BuddyTV news »

Burn Notice won't return to the USA Network until January 21st but Gabrielle Anwar fortunately has something to keep herself occupied during the five-month hiatus (the last episode aired August). The English actress is appearing alongside One Tree Hill star Craig Sheffer in a Hallmark Original Movie tentatively titled Murder Among Friends.

Anwar, who on Burn Notice plays Westen's ex Fiona Glenanne, will play art authenticator Joss Jenner, who joins her college girlfriends for a bridal shower that turns into a crime scene when one of the friends is found dead and is presumed to have been murdered. One of the friends becomes devastated and fixated on solving the crime. Sheffer, who plays Dan's older but under-achieving brother Keith on One Tree Hill, will play sheriff Zach Watts, who along with the local authorities immediately start an investigation.

TNT searching for next hit

6 December 2009 2:00 PM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

TNT might know drama, but does it remember how to launch a hit show?

On Monday night, the network premieres its dramedy series "Men of a Certain Age," which follows a trio of fortysomething guys as they navigate friendships, work and romance. Critics are raving about "Men," which marks Ray Romano's return to television in a starring role.

If the show can draw ratings to match its reviews, it won't be a moment too soon. TNT, the once-dominant basic cable brand, is stuck in a midlife crisis of its own.

Despite making a push for a new hit this year by debuting the most new series in the network's history (five), TNT is nearly flat with 2008, averaging 2.3 million viewers in primetime and a 0.8 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic. Although broadcast has suffered drastic declines during the past four years and basic cable has enjoyed overall growth, TNT hasn't »
