Silvio Horta revealed in an interview that it was entirely the network's decision to hire Lindsay Lohan on the show, against Horta's own wishes. Lohan was so difficult to work with that even though she signed up for six episodes in season 3, her character was written out after three.
Mark's name in "Fake Plastic Snow" is Mark Saint-James, but in "Don't Ask Don't Tell," his name is Mark Weiner. (From a deleted scene from "Don't Ask Don't Tell," Betty asks Marc: "Your real name is Weiner?" Marc answers: "I had to change it. A gay kid named Weiner? I wanted to beat myself up.")
Show creator Silvio Horta, who is openly gay, addressed rumors about Justin's sexuality by confirming (in a February 2007 USA Today interview) that as Justin ages, he will experience "the journey." Horta also said, "I see myself in him. Growing up, I certainly felt like an outsider at times. But there's this sweet innocence in Justin that sees the positive." In 2008, Horta expanded on this statement, telling a different interviewer that when he started to create the character of Justin, "it really just popped into my head....I tried five different types of kids, and they all felt the same. Then suddenly, I thought - What if you had a little gay kid? I wrote him that way, and it was like: This is fun! This is interesting and different." Toward the end of the final season, Justin did get his first kiss from another boy, Austin, and he and Austin started dating.
Despite being set in New York and its pilot being filmed there, the first and second seasons were filmed entirely in Los Angeles. Stock footage was used to establish that the show is set in New York. At the beginning of the third season the show relocated back to New York.
Patricia Field created all of the costumes in the pilot. Field, a resident of New York, left the show when production moved to Los Angeles, but returned as costume designer for the third season, when the show relocated back to New York.
The house in which the Suarez family live in is not a real house. The inside of the house is a set and the outside is just 1 wall against a green screen to create a fake street with many other homes. This is the case when the show was filmed in Los Angeles, when the show relocated to New York, an actual house in Jackson Heights, Queens was used for the exteriors.
