, who is openly gay, addressed rumors about Justin's sexuality by confirming (in a February 2007 USA Today interview) that as Justin ages, he will experience "the journey." Horta also said, "I see myself in him. Growing up, I certainly felt like an outsider at times. But there's this sweet innocence in Justin that sees the positive." In 2008, Horta expanded on this statement, telling a different interviewer that when he started to create the character of Justin, "it really just popped into my head....I tried five different types of kids, and they all felt the same. Then suddenly, I thought - What if you had a little gay kid? I wrote him that way, and it was like: This is fun! This is interesting and different."
