In Review: Showtime's Homeland Spies a Stirring New Take on the War Hero

2 October 2011 10:35 AM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

Beginning immediately yet coincidentally in the aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks, 24 for years played with the idea of new atrocities being committed on U.S. soil. And while that Fox thriller at times put an American (if not downright presidential) face on the architects of such treason, Showtime’s Homeland compellingly boils the drama down to this: What if a celebrated American war hero was in fact our country’s next big threat? What if a jihad was led by one of us?

Review: Cat Fight! Emily VanCamp Wants to Destroy Madeleine Stowe in "Revenge."

19 September 2011 12:46 PM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

I really wanted to like Revenge. The new ABC show is about a mysterious woman (Brothers & Sisters' Emily VanCamp) who rents a beach house in the Hamptons in order to wreak revenge on the family in the mansion next door, especially the bitchy matriarch (Madeleine Stowe).

I mean, come on! A revenge story about warring women in the Hamptons? I am so there!

There are two ways this show could've been great: as some kind of smart, twist-y noir-ish thriller — something like the brilliant new Sarah Michelle Gellar show Ringer. Either that or as an intentionally (or unintentionally) campy, over-the-top soap opera — Melrose Place, after Heather Locklear joined the cast and they turned it soapy, but before it went off the rails.

Revenge is definitely not "smart." But at least in the pilot, it's not quite campy or over-the-top enough to make it much of a guilty pleasure either.

AfterElton Fall 2011 TV Guide: We Watch the New Crap So You Don't Have To!

23 August 2011 7:14 AM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

It's surprisingly good.

That's our take on the upcoming fall television season, based on what we've seen and interviews we've done about this season’s new programming. There are at least six shows that look terrific, and at least eight more than have definite potential.

Of course, there are a few stinkers, but that's to be expected.

And sure, there are a few shows that seem like they're aping each other: Once Upon a Time and Grimm both taking on fairy tales, and Pan Am and The Playboy Club both exploring life in the 1960s. But in each case, there is one show that is clearly better than the other.

Thankfully, there are only a few remakes – namely, Charlie's Angels and Prime Suspect.

And while the supernatural has long been fodder for TV, this falls continues the very welcome trend of fantasy becoming more sophisticated, with programming like A Gifted Man »

Revenge for Grey’s Anatomy’s James Tupper

30 June 2011 4:30 PM, PDT | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

If you watch network TV then there is no way you haven’t seen James Tupper. From ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, Samantha Who, and Men in Trees to NBC’s Mercy, Tupper has more than his fair share of experience with series TV, and TVLine brings word that he is once again calling ABC home as he steps into a fatherly role in the new fall series, Revenge.

The new show is about Emily Thorne’s (Emily Van Camp) quest for revenge against those who wronged her father (Tupper). In the original pilot, Marc Blucas portrayed the father but he moved on to USA’s Necessary Roughness so Tupper stepped in. While the part is a recurring gig, the father will only be seen in flashbacks throughout the series. Madeleine Stowe, Henry Czerny, Gabriel Mann, Connor Paolo, Nick Wechsler and Ashley Madekwe also star.

'Revenge': James Tupper replaces Marc Blucas in ABC drama

29 June 2011 5:13 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

We have to admit, when "Buffy" star Marc Blucas was cast as Emily Van Camp's father in the upcoming ABC drama "Revenge," we went, "huh?" and immediately checked birthdays and did a little math.

It actually worked out okay, because in the pilot episode, Blucas was seen mostly in flashbacks to Van Camp's character's childhood.

But with Blucas committed to USA's "Necessary Roughness," ABC has cast a replacement with a couple of years on him to play daddy dearest. TVLine reports that "Men in Trees" star James Tupper will be replacing Blucas.

The role is a recurring guest spot, and Tupper is expected to appear in several flashbacks throughout the series -- though there's no word on whether he'll enter the modern day Hamptons setting of the new show.

"Revenge" premieres on Wednesday, Sept 21, at 10 p.m. on ABC. »
