James Tupper's got a knack for mystery.

The 51-year-old actor, who gained notoriety on medical dramas like Mercy and Grey's Anatomy, seems to have hit his stride in the mystery genre with roles in Revenge and Big Little Lies.

Most recently, however, Tupper has transitioned from covering up crimes to solving them, with his latest role as an FBI agent working with an archaeologist (Courtney Thorne-Smith) to solve a murder in Hallmark Movies & Mysteries' Site Unseen: An Emma Fielding Mystery.

"I think Hallmark is doing this really exciting thing right now, where they buy a series of books, they're books for young adults, or adolescents, and they're really fun Agatha Christie-style mysteries," the Canadian actor excitedly told Et over the phone earlier this month. "I actually signed on for three of them."

CBS Developing Two Dramas From Anna Fricke With Mark Gordon, Ridley Scott (Exclusive)

CBS is developing two new dramas from writer and executive producer Anna Fricke — one with Mark Gordon and another with Ridley Scott.

“Patriots,” follows an estranged brother and sister — an FBI agent and a professor with former ties to Islamic extremism — who unexpectedly reunite to counter violent terrorism in the city of Boston. Fricke will executive produce with Scott and David Zucker of Scott Free Productions. The project hails from CBS Television Studios, which Fricke signed a two-year overall deal with earlier this year.

“Murder Room,” produced by CBS TV Studios in association with Mark Gordon Productions and EOne, tells the story of a woman recruited by her mother into the Vidocq Society, an international think tank of the world’s best forensic experts dedicated to solving the unsolvable. Scott Elrod is checking in to Chicago Fire.

The actor, best known to Grey’s Anatomy viewers as Meredith’s army doctor of a love interest, has signed on for a multiple-episode arc with the NBC drama.

According to multiple outlets, Elrod will appear on Season 5 as “lifestyle” celebrity Travis Brenner.

That's... different.

Look for Elrod’s character to drop-dead gorgeous (sort of hard to avoid when this actor is playing with) and to have a million Instagram followers.

He and Severide will cross paths on a fire call, after which the rescue squad lieutenant will be tempted to join Brenner’s fast-paced inner circle.

It certainly sounds like a unique direction for the series to go in.

In addition to his Grey’s Anatomy role as Dr. William Thorpe, Elrod’s television resume includes stints on The Young and the Restless and Men in Trees.

Show Premise

After reflecting on the life of his recently deceased plumber coworker, Eugene Gurkin realizes that he wants to get more out of life, and decides to steal from the rich and famous in order to get it. He enlists his plumbing colleague, a cab driver, a security guard, and a waitress to achieve the goal.
